Father Alois Bett, a respected and beloved Catholic priest known for his tireless work as a peacemaker in the community, was tragically shot dead on Thursday afternoon, just hours after being photographed during his morning rounds.
The images, believed to be among the last taken of Father Bett, show the clergyman greeting members of the community and offering prayers at the church grounds—a routine he faithfully upheld. Residents recall his warmth and humility, attributes that made him a pillar of hope in a region long strained by political and tribal tensions.
Local authorities confirmed that Father Bett was attacked and fatally shot shortly after midday near his parish compound. Witnesses say he had just completed a pastoral visit when unknown assailants ambushed him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
"We have lost a shepherd, a voice of reason, and a symbol of unity," said Bishop Daniel Muriuki during a press briefing. “Father Bett devoted his life to peacebuilding and reconciliation. This is not just a loss for the Church, but for the entire nation.”
The motive for the killing remains unclear, though investigators say they are pursuing multiple leads. No arrests had been made as of Friday morning.
Father Bett, in his mid-50s, was known for mediating disputes between rival communities and advocating for nonviolence, especially among youth. Tributes have since poured in from religious leaders, politicians, and citizens across the country.
"This is a dark day," said community elder Margaret Nyambura. "He saved lives with his words and prayers. Who would kill a man of peace?"
The church has called for calm and urged the public to allow law enforcement to conduct a full investigation. Meanwhile, a vigil is planned for this evening at his parish, where mourners are gathering to honor his legacy and demand justice.
Father Bett is survived by his siblings and a grieving congregation that will remember him for the compassion and conviction he lived by until his final breath.
