Preparations are in full swing in Homa Bay County ahead of the national Madaraka Day celebrations scheduled for Sunday, June 1. The event, which will take place at Raila Odinga Stadium, marks the first time the county will host the national holiday since Kenya gained independence in 1963.

This year’s celebrations will focus on the theme “Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs,” emphasizing the country’s growing commitment to harnessing its maritime resources for sustainable development.

President William Ruto, speaking during a visit to Homa Bay ahead of the event, promised residents a renewed focus on development, pledging to address long-standing regional inequalities.

"Na mimi nimefika hapa leo ili tuondoe ile ubaguzi imekuwa hapo nyuma, tuweze kuhakikisha ya kwamba kuna maendeleo katika kila sehemu ya Kenya," the President said, signaling a push for inclusive growth across all regions.

Governor Gladys Wanga expressed optimism that hosting the event would not only raise the county’s national profile but also significantly boost investment in the blue economy sector.

"Na vile tulikuja hapa na Rais mwaka wa 2023 haukuwa na pia, kulikuwa na ambayo imebomoka na ilikuwa kwa miaka hamsini. Na venye alisema hii pia itajengwa, watu walifikiria labda ni utani lakini kwa miaka miwili sasa imekuwa tayari," Governor Wanga stated, referring to the newly renovated stadium and other infrastructure upgrades completed under the current administration.

The governor also hailed the decision to bring the celebrations to Homa Bay as a symbol of devolution's success, noting that it demonstrates national recognition of the potential in counties previously overlooked.

The national celebrations are expected to attract thousands of attendees and dignitaries from across the country, with security, hospitality, and logistics arrangements already underway. Homa Bay residents are hopeful the occasion will spark long-term investment and growth in the region.

As Kenya prepares to commemorate 61 years of self-rule, all eyes will be on Homa Bay as it showcases not only its natural beauty and economic promise but also the enduring spirit of devolution.
