Cabinet Secretary for Health, Hon. Aden Bare Duale, EGH, has lauded Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) for its exceptional healthcare service delivery and leadership in medical waste management. Speaking during an official tour of the facility in Eldoret, CS Duale underscored the importance of robust health systems and infrastructure in achieving patient safety and national health goals.
The CS presided over the incineration of 5.5 tonnes of illicit tobacco products at the MTRH incineration plant, including seized shisha, gutkha, and flavored e-cigarettes intercepted at Eldoret International Airport. The event was part of Kenya’s commemoration of World No Tobacco Day, underscoring the government's commitment to eliminating illegal tobacco trade.
“MTRH has proven that it is not only a premier institution in patient care but also a national leader in safe medical waste management,” said CS Duale. “We must maintain working systems in every hospital if we are to protect both patients and healthcare workers.”
Accompanied by Principal Secretary for Public Health, Ms. Mary Muthoni, and other top officials, the CS also applauded MTRH for its outstanding maternal healthcare services, particularly its recent achievement of zero maternal deaths. He encouraged the hospital leadership to continue setting the pace in diagnostic and specialized services, emphasizing the importance of fully functional medical equipment.
Turning to the broader issue of public health safety, Duale issued a stern warning against the proliferation of illicit tobacco products. “Illicit tobacco is not just a regulatory issue—it is a threat to public health, national security, and the future of our youth,” he declared, adding that the government had revoked licenses of all agencies linked to the intercepted contraband.
He reiterated Kenya’s unwavering commitment to international health standards and anti-tobacco frameworks, including the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC).
The CS commended the coordinated efforts of the Border Management Committee—comprising KRA, KEBS, Immigration, Security, and Port Health—for their vigilance in seizing the illegal products, calling their actions “a model of inter-agency collaboration.”
MTRH CEO Dr. Philip Kirwa presented an overview of the hospital’s mandate and ongoing developments, noting its role as a regional referral facility serving 25 counties across Western Kenya. He highlighted major projects, including the newly operational catheterization laboratory, a 1.5 Tesla MRI unit, and the forthcoming MTRH Multi-Specialty Hospital in Kiplombe.
Other dignitaries in attendance included Uasin Gishu Deputy Governor Hon. Evans Kapkea, Tobacco Control Board Chairperson Dr. Naomi Shaban, and members of the MTRH management team.
The visit reaffirmed MTRH’s position as a national leader in healthcare delivery, with the Ministry of Health pledging continued support for its expansion and modernization.
