Busia Women Rep Launches Sports Academy to Empower Youth Through Talent Development

Busia County has officially launched the construction of a new Sports Academy at Igara Secondary School, marking a significant step toward youth empowerment and talent development through structured sports programs.

The groundbreaking ceremony, led by Busia County Woman Representative Hon. Catherine Omanyo, brought together leaders and stakeholders from across the region and national sports institutions.

Speaking at the event, Hon. Omanyo emphasized the transformative power of sports in shaping the future of young people.

"When we nurture talents, we ignite dreams; when we empower youths through sports, we build nations," she said. "This academy will not only develop athletic ability but also instill discipline, teamwork, and a sense of purpose among our youth."

Hon. Omanyo was joined by her Kakamega counterpart, Hon. Elsie Muhanda, who praised the initiative and called for more regional collaboration in youth development.

The Kenya Academy of Sports was represented by Director of Research John Okwemba Ngota, standing in for CEO Dr. Doreen Odhiambo. Also in attendance was Eng. Eugene Okello Omudek, Chairman of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Busia County, along with other distinguished guests from the education and sports sectors.

The academy will serve as a training and mentorship hub for young athletes across the county, providing access to coaching, facilities, and opportunities to compete at higher levels. The initiative is expected to play a key role in addressing youth unemployment and promoting positive social values through sport.

Construction is set to begin immediately, with the first phase focusing on infrastructure development and resource mobilization. The project aligns with national goals to invest in youth and promote sports as a tool for empowerment, unity, and social transformation.

The Igara Sports Academy is expected to benefit thousands of young people in Busia County and beyond, creating a pipeline of talent ready to represent the region and the country on national and international stages.
