Kasipul Kabondo MP Charles Ong'ondo Were Shot Dead in Nairobi

Tragedy has struck the nation this evening following the reported assassination of Kasipul Kabondo Member of Parliament, Charles Ong'ondo Were, in Nairobi. The legislator was fatally shot by unknown gunmen riding on a motorbike at around 7:30 p.m. near the City Mortuary roundabout.

Eyewitnesses say that one of the assailants jumped off the motorbike and approached the MP’s vehicle before opening fire. Mr. Were was shot multiple times while seated in the car. His driver, who narrowly escaped unharmed, rushed him to Nairobi Hospital, where the MP was pronounced dead on arrival.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrived at the scene shortly after the incident and have cordoned off the area as investigations begin. Police are yet to establish the motive behind the shocking attack.

This incident comes just days after another high-profile shooting in the city. On Saturday night, a Member of the County Assembly (MCA) from the same county as MP Were was also targeted by gunmen in Nairobi. The MCA survived the attack, but the circumstances remain unclear as police continue their investigations.

The brazen attacks have sparked fears of a targeted pattern of violence against political figures from Homa Bay County, with leaders and citizens alike calling for urgent answers and heightened security.

More updates to follow as the story develops.
