11 Arrested, 350 Kgs of Fake Gold Seized in Nairobi Gold Scam Bust

Detectives from the Nairobi Regional Criminal Investigations Office have busted a sophisticated gold scam syndicate, arresting eleven suspects and seizing 350 kilograms of counterfeit gold in a sting operation in the upscale Spring Valley estate.

The operation was launched following a complaint from a victim who reported being defrauded of USD 546,000 in a fake gold deal. Acting on credible intelligence, the detectives traced the suspects to their hideout and conducted a coordinated raid that led to the arrests and recovery of incriminating materials.

During the operation, detectives confiscated 305 kilograms of fake gold, an electronic gold tester commonly known as a tester gun, a weighing machine, and several documents believed to be linked to the fraudulent operations. A dust coat bearing the logo of the Ministry of Mining was also recovered, allegedly used to mislead and build trust with their victims.

The arrested individuals include seven Kenyan nationals—Allan Zephaniah Onyango, Nicodemus Okoth, Phillip Onyango, Elmad Ochola, Shem Omollo, Edward Leonard Ochieng, and James Jeremiah Akumu—alongside two Congolese nationals, Nfundiko Kamira and Lukabaya Mulamba, and two Cameroonian citizens, Ibrahim Nzamgou and Mike Fouapon.

All suspects are currently in custody at Capitol Hill Police Station as investigations continue. Authorities believe the group is part of a larger, well-coordinated international fraud network that targets wealthy investors and unsuspecting buyers with the promise of lucrative gold deals.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has reiterated its commitment to cracking down on such criminal enterprises and is urging anyone who may have fallen victim to similar scams to come forward.

The seized items are being held as exhibits as detectives intensify their probe into what is believed to be a far-reaching scam that spans borders and leverages fake credentials to lure victims.
