Through the Lens to the Graduation Stage: Photographer Elly Kaptain Celebrates Hard-Earned Degree at MKU

Renowned and experienced photographer Elly Kaptain, popularly known as Elicom, has graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication and Mass Media from Mount Kenya University (MKU), bringing to a close a challenging but rewarding chapter in his academic journey.

Kaptain was among the graduands who celebrated their academic achievements during a colourful graduation ceremony at the university, surrounded by family, friends, colleagues and fellow graduates.

For the celebrated photographer, however, the graduation was more than a ceremony marked by academic gowns, caps, photographs and celebrations. It was the culmination of years of sacrifice, determination and perseverance while juggling education, professional work and family responsibilities.

Reflecting on the achievement, Kaptain described earning his degree as a major milestone, acknowledging that the journey to graduation was far from easy.

“I count attaining this degree as a milestone to me. The journey hasn’t been easy, especially raising fees while bearing in mind that I have to bear other responsibilities, but I made it finally,” he said.

His journey reflects the reality faced by many working students who pursue higher education while simultaneously meeting financial, professional and family obligations.

As a professional photographer, Kaptain had to balance his academic commitments with the demands of his career. Photography requires time, creativity, mobility and dedication, with assignments often taking place during weekends, evenings and other periods when students would ordinarily be concentrating on their studies.

At the same time, he had family responsibilities to attend to, making the pursuit of his degree a demanding balancing act.

Financial challenges also formed part of the journey. Raising university fees while meeting other daily responsibilities required sacrifice and careful planning. There were moments of financial strain and exhaustion, but Kaptain remained determined to see his studies through to the end.

The challenges, he says, ultimately made the achievement even more meaningful.

In celebrating his graduation, Kaptain paused to acknowledge what he considers the greatest source of his strength throughout the journey—his faith in God.

He gave all glory and gratitude to God for what he described as an incredible milestone, crediting divine grace for helping him overcome the obstacles that stood between him and his academic dream.

Grateful. Graceful. Graduated.” became a defining message as he marked the achievement.

For Kaptain, the degree also represents an important addition to a career that has already been built around communication, storytelling and visual creativity.

His professional experience in photography has given him years of exposure to the power of images in documenting events, people, communities and important moments. His academic training in Communication and Mass Media has now added another layer to that experience.

Through his studies, Kaptain says he gained a deeper understanding of communication, storytelling, media and visual communication.

The knowledge acquired in lecture halls, assignments and academic projects complemented the skills he had developed behind the camera, giving him a broader understanding of how stories are conceived, communicated and received by audiences.

He believes the combination of academic knowledge and practical experience will continue to shape his work as a photographer and storyteller.

“Beyond the academic achievement, this journey has shaped me professionally,” he reflected.

“My studies have strengthened my understanding of communication, storytelling, media and visual communication, while complementing my passion and experience in photography. Every assignment, project and experience has sharpened the way I see, capture and tell stories through the lens.”

The achievement comes at a time when visual storytelling has become increasingly influential in the media and communication industry.

Photographers are no longer simply expected to capture images. They are increasingly required to understand the story behind an image, the audience consuming it and the broader communication objectives attached to it.

For Kaptain, his academic background now gives him an opportunity to approach photography from an even wider perspective.

His journey also offers an inspiring example to professionals who may be considering returning to school or pursuing higher education while already established in their careers.

Rather than abandoning his professional responsibilities to concentrate solely on his studies, Kaptain took on the difficult task of managing both.

The experience required discipline, commitment and resilience.

There were likely moments when giving up would have seemed easier, particularly when financial pressures, work demands and family responsibilities converged. Yet, he persisted until the day he finally walked across the graduation stage.

The colourful graduation ceremony therefore became a celebration not only of academic achievement but also of perseverance.

For those who have followed his career in photography, the graduation marks a new chapter for a professional who now combines years of hands-on experience with formal academic training in communication and mass media.

The degree could also open new opportunities for Kaptain in the wider media and communications industry, where photography, journalism, digital media, storytelling and strategic communication increasingly intersect.

His story is a reminder that success does not always follow a straight or easy path. Sometimes, it comes after years of balancing competing responsibilities, overcoming financial difficulties and continuing to pursue a goal despite uncertainty.

As the celebrations continue, Kaptain can look back at the journey with pride—not only because he has earned a university degree, but because he did so while carrying the weight of professional and personal responsibilities.

From capturing important moments through his camera to becoming the subject of one of his own most memorable moments, Kaptain's graduation has become a story of perseverance.

The photographer who has spent years documenting the milestones of others has now had an opportunity to document one of the most significant milestones of his own life.

From the lens to the lecture hall, and finally to the graduation stage, Elly Kaptain’s journey is a testament to the power of faith, determination and persistence.
