Renowned and experienced photographer Elly Kaptain, popularly known as Elicom, has graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication and Mass Media from Mount Kenya University (MKU), bringing to a close a challenging but rewarding chapter in his academic journey.

Kaptain was among the graduands who celebrated their academic achievements during a colourful graduation ceremony at the university, surrounded by family, friends, colleagues and fellow graduates.

“I count attaining this degree as a milestone to me. The journey hasn’t been easy, especially raising fees while bearing in mind that I have to bear other responsibilities, but I made it finally,” he said.

As a professional photographer, Kaptain had to balance his academic commitments with the demands of his career. “My studies have strengthened my understanding of communication, storytelling, media and visual communication, while complementing my passion and experience in photography. Every assignment, project and experience has sharpened the way I see, capture and tell stories through the lens.”

The achievement comes at a time when visual storytelling has become increasingly influential in the media and communication industry.

Photographers are no longer simply expected to capture images. They are increasingly required to understand the story behind an image, the audience consuming it and the broader communication objectives attached to it.
