Ruto Unveils Jobs and Sh6.1 Billion Projects in Kericho, Targets Youth Unemployment

President William Ruto has outlined a series of major investments in Kericho County, saying his administration is deliberately targeting unemployment through job creation, industrialisation, infrastructure and expanded opportunities for young people.

Ruto said the government had so far created 1.1 million jobs through the Affordable Housing Programme, 300,000 digital jobs and 680,000 overseas employment opportunities secured through bilateral labour agreements with partner countries.

Speaking in Kericho, the President launched the construction of the Chelimo Special Economic Zone, which he said will host a range of industries, including business process outsourcing, agro-processing, veterinary medicines, medical devices and equipment, light agricultural machinery, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals.

Ruto said the business process outsourcing component alone is expected to create more than 10,000 jobs for young people in Kericho and surrounding areas.

The President also laid the foundation stone for the 2,280-unit Chelimo Affordable Housing Project, which will cost Sh5.9 billion.

According to Ruto, the housing project will not only provide affordable homes but also create employment opportunities and stimulate economic activity through the construction value chain.

He later initiated the construction of the KSh5.6 billion Kabianga University School of Medicine and Health Sciences.

The first phase of the project will comprise the School of Medicine, School of Nursing and associated facilities, including a central e-learning library, lecture theatres and administration facilities.

Ruto said the investment would expand access to specialised medical training and strengthen the country’s capacity to produce healthcare professionals.

To improve access to the various investments, the President also unveiled plans for the construction of the Mid-West–Chelimo road.

He said improved road connectivity would facilitate the movement of people and goods while supporting businesses and industries expected to operate within the area.

The projects form part of the government’s broader strategy to create employment, expand economic opportunities and stimulate development through strategic investments in housing, manufacturing, education, healthcare and infrastructure.

Ruto said the government would continue making deliberate investments aimed at giving young Kenyans greater access to jobs and opportunities both locally and abroad.
