Uasin Gishu gubernatorial aspirant Willy Kenei has highlighted his past humanitarian work, saying his leadership philosophy is rooted in service, compassion and taking action when communities are facing difficult circumstances.

Kenei says his experience outside elective politics has shaped his approach to leadership, arguing that leaders should demonstrate their commitment to the people through practical interventions rather than waiting to occupy political office.

In a statement highlighting his record of service, Kenei pointed to his role as Chairman of the Save a Life Initiative during the 2023/24 period when Turkana County was grappling with a severe famine situation.

During the period, the community-driven humanitarian initiative mobilised food donations valued at approximately KSh15 million to support families affected by hunger and food insecurity.

The initiative brought together people from different sectors of society, including businesspeople, religious institutions, farmers, professionals and other well-wishers, in an effort to provide urgent assistance to vulnerable families.

Kenei said the mobilisation demonstrated the power of communities working together to respond to humanitarian challenges, particularly in areas where families were struggling to access basic necessities.

The food donations were distributed to affected families and communities in partnership with the Kenya Red Cross, according to Kenei.

He has described the intervention as an important chapter in his leadership journey, saying it showed that meaningful leadership is possible even without holding an elective position.

Leadership Beyond Political Office

Kenei says his experience with the Save a Life Initiative reinforced his belief that leadership should be measured by the difference a person makes in the lives of others.

He argues that leaders should be willing to step forward during crises and mobilise available resources to support communities facing hardship.

According to the gubernatorial aspirant, the Turkana intervention brought together people with different backgrounds and interests around a shared humanitarian objective.

The initiative's ability to mobilise millions of shillings worth of food donations, he says, reflected his capacity to bring together different stakeholders and coordinate them towards addressing a common challenge.

Kenei is now seeking to transfer the same approach to his political ambitions in Uasin Gishu, where he has been engaging residents as he prepares for the 2027 General Election.

He says his leadership vision is centred on putting residents at the heart of governance and ensuring that county leadership remains responsive to the challenges facing ordinary citizens.

People-Centred Campaign

As the race for the Uasin Gishu governorship gradually takes shape, Kenei has sought to distinguish himself by presenting a leadership record that includes community and humanitarian service.

His latest message is built around the theme “Standing With the People. Leadership That Cares,” with the aspirant arguing that leaders should be present when communities need them most.

Kenei says his humanitarian work in Turkana is evidence that his commitment to serving communities predates his current political ambitions.

He maintains that leadership should not begin only after a candidate wins an election, but should be reflected in how an individual interacts with and responds to the needs of society.

The aspirant has also emphasised the importance of partnerships in addressing community challenges, pointing to the collaboration between the Save a Life Initiative and the Kenya Red Cross during the Turkana famine response.

He says bringing together businesses, faith-based organisations, professionals, farmers and individual well-wishers demonstrated that collective action can make a significant difference during times of crisis.

Eyeing Uasin Gishu Top Seat

Kenei is among the political figures positioning themselves for the Uasin Gishu gubernatorial contest ahead of the 2027 polls.

The county is expected to witness a competitive political contest as aspirants seek to convince residents that they have the experience, vision and leadership capacity required to steer the county.

Kenei's campaign is seeking to place service delivery, compassion and community empowerment at the centre of his political message.

He has branded his bid “For a Prosperous Uasin Gishu County,” promising to champion a leadership approach that prioritises the interests and welfare of residents.

While highlighting his humanitarian record, Kenei says his experience of mobilising resources for famine victims has strengthened his conviction that leaders must be willing to listen to communities and respond to their immediate and long-term needs.

He argues that prosperity cannot be achieved through government programmes alone, but requires collaboration between county authorities, businesses, professionals, community organisations, religious institutions and residents.

“Leadership Is About Action”

Kenei says his record of service remains central to his political journey as he continues reaching out to residents across Uasin Gishu.

He maintains that the ability to mobilise people and resources during a crisis is one of the qualities that should define effective leadership.

For him, the Turkana famine response was not simply a humanitarian exercise but an illustration of what can be achieved when individuals take responsibility and work together to address the problems affecting communities.

“Leadership is about service. Leadership is about compassion. Leadership is about action,” Kenei says.

As the 2027 political contest draws closer, Kenei is expected to continue using his community engagement and humanitarian record to make his case to Uasin Gishu voters.

His campaign message remains focused on a county where residents come first and where leadership is measured by tangible action and the ability to respond to people's needs.
