PS ROSELINE NJOGU CHAMPIONS DAIRY GROWTH AS MERU RETAINS TOP MILK PRODUCER STATUS

Meru County continues to strengthen its position as Kenya’s leading milk-producing region, with sustained government interventions helping dairy farmers improve productivity, reduce production costs and enhance household incomes.

The progress was highlighted during grassroots engagements led by Principal Secretary for Diaspora Affairs Roseline K. Njogu CBS, who met dairy farmers from Nyaki, Kithoka, Ruiri and Ontulili Dairy Cooperatives.

The engagements offered PS Njogu an opportunity to interact directly with farmers, listen to their experiences and discuss practical measures for strengthening the dairy value chain.

The forums also demonstrated the PS’s commitment to taking government closer to the people and ensuring that farmers benefit from programmes designed to improve their livelihoods.

Farmers who participated in the engagements cited improved milk prices, attributing the positive trend partly to government support through subsidised sexed semen, dairy feeds and farmer training programmes.

These interventions have helped farmers improve the quality and productivity of their herds while strengthening dairy farming as a reliable source of income for households across Meru.

PS Njogu encouraged farmers to continue adopting cost-effective production practices, improve productivity and strengthen post-production handling.

She emphasised the importance of efficiency throughout the dairy value chain, noting that better production practices, proper milk handling and improved storage and transportation can significantly enhance farmers’ returns.

In a further demonstration of her practical approach to supporting farmers, PS Njogu donated milk churns to the dairy cooperatives.

The equipment will enhance the cooperatives’ capacity for milk storage and transportation, improve milk-handling standards and help minimise losses arising from inadequate storage facilities.

For farmers, such interventions provide practical support that can make a meaningful difference in protecting the quality and value of milk from the farm to the market.

The Meru engagements also provided an opportunity for residents to learn more about the State Department for Diaspora Affairs and the opportunities that can be unlocked through Kenya’s global diaspora network.

PS Njogu sensitised communities on how they can tap into diaspora-linked investments, skills, knowledge, technology, market opportunities and partnerships to complement local economic development.

Through the Diaspora Mashinani initiative, the government is taking the diaspora conversation beyond national forums and into local communities, enabling Kenyans to better understand how the millions of citizens living and working abroad can contribute to development back home.

For an agricultural county such as Meru, these linkages could provide additional opportunities in agribusiness, value addition, technology transfer, market access and investment.

However, the central focus of PS Njogu’s engagement remained the welfare and economic empowerment of farmers.

Her direct interaction with dairy cooperatives reflects a leadership approach that places citizens at the heart of government programmes, combining policy with practical interventions that respond to challenges on the ground.
