Oburu Oginga Travels to UK for Medical Check-Up, Hands ODM Duties to Deputies

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party Leader Senator Oburu Oginga has travelled to the United Kingdom for a medical check-up, announcing a temporary break from his party duties to allow him to undergo medical evaluation and rest.

In a statement addressed to ODM members, supporters and Kenyans, Oburu said his visit to the UK follows the advice of his doctors and the party leadership. He said the trip is intended to provide an opportunity for a comprehensive assessment of his health while allowing him time for rest and rejuvenation.

Oburu described the temporary step back as a deliberate and strategic moment for ODM, saying the party is undergoing a period of transition that will test its institutional strength and preparedness.

“This is a time of transition, where the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is being tested on its readiness and preparedness on institutionalism,” Oburu said.

He assured ODM supporters that the party has strong internal mechanisms, democratic maturity and systems capable of ensuring that its day-to-day operations continue smoothly in his absence.

The ODM leader said he had entrusted the party's leadership to his deputies, Kisii Governor Paul Simba Arati and Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir, who will work closely with the National Central Committee and the party secretariat.

Oburu expressed confidence in the two deputy party leaders, describing them as capable of steering the movement effectively during his absence.

“As an elder who has walked this long journey with you, I have absolute faith in their collective leadership, discipline, and vision to steer our movement effectively,” he said.

He urged ODM officials, members and supporters across the country to cooperate with the party's leadership, remain united and maintain focus on the movement's national objectives.

The announcement comes at a significant period for ODM as the party seeks to strengthen its structures and chart its political direction ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Oburu thanked Kenyans and ODM supporters for their prayers, goodwill and continued support, assuring them that the party's national operations would continue without interruption during his absence.
