KENYA REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO NILE BASIN COOPERATION

Water Secretary Eng. S.A.O. Alima, EBS, has reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to cooperation, partnership and sustainable management of shared water resources within the Nile River Basin.

Speaking at the Nile Council of Ministers Special Committee Meeting held in Bujumbura, Burundi, Eng. Alima represented the Cabinet Secretary for Water, Sanitation and Irrigation, Eng. Eric Mugaa.

The two-day meeting, convened by the Nile Council of Ministers, is reviewing concerns raised regarding selected investment projects within the Eastern Nile.

Eng. Alima commended the Government of Burundi for hosting the meeting and appreciated the participation of Tanzania and Uganda, noting that solidarity, partnership and collective responsibility remain essential in addressing challenges facing the region.

He reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to working collaboratively with Nile Basin countries to advance cooperation, sustainable development and the equitable and sustainable management of shared water resources.

The Water Secretary also commended the Technical Advisory Committee for its preliminary work in examining concerns raised by Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia, noting that the work provides a valuable foundation for the Special Committee’s deliberations.

He called on participants to remain guided by mutual respect, partnership and the spirit of cooperation as they work towards fulfilling the mandate entrusted to the Committee by the Nile Council of Ministers.
