Governor Bii Launches KSh1 Million Governor's Cup
Uasin Gishu Governor Dr. Jonathan Bii Chelilim has launched the 2026 Governor's Cup Football Tournament, unveiling a countywide youth empowerment initiative aimed at combating crime, drug and substance abuse, and political violence ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The tournament was officially launched at Naiberi Primary School Grounds, bringing together hundreds of young footballers, coaches, sports officials, community leaders and county government representatives.
Speaking during the launch, Governor Bii said the tournament is part of the county's broader strategy to provide meaningful opportunities for young people by engaging them in sports while nurturing their talents.
"The Governor's Cup is more than just a football competition. It is an investment in our young people. We want our youth to stay away from crime, illegal drugs and other destructive activities by engaging them in sports that build discipline, teamwork and hope," said the governor.
The county boss noted that football has the power to transform lives by creating pathways to professional careers while promoting peace and social cohesion among communities.
Shielding Youth from Political Manipulation
Governor Bii warned against the exploitation of unemployed youth by politicians seeking to incite violence during the country's election period.
"As we approach the next General Election, we must ensure our youth are not used to cause violence or disrupt peace. When they are actively involved in sports and other productive activities, they become ambassadors of peace rather than instruments of conflict," he said.
He emphasized that the county government remains committed to creating platforms that empower young people economically and socially while strengthening peaceful coexistence.
KSh1 Million Grand Prize
To raise the tournament's competitiveness, Governor Bii announced that the winning team will walk away with a KSh1 million cash prize, making the Governor's Cup one of the most lucrative grassroots football competitions in the North Rift region.
He said the prize money is intended to motivate teams while encouraging more young people to participate in organized sports.
County sports officials said the tournament will feature teams drawn from all wards across Uasin Gishu County, providing hundreds of players with an opportunity to showcase their talents before scouts and professional clubs.
Platform for Talent Development
Governor Bii said the county government will use the tournament to identify promising footballers who can benefit from mentorship, professional training and opportunities to join elite clubs.
He noted that many successful Kenyan footballers began their careers in grassroots competitions and expressed confidence that the Governor's Cup would become a pipeline for nurturing future national stars.
"Our dream is to see talented young men and women from Uasin Gishu earn scholarships, sign professional contracts and even represent Kenya internationally through the opportunities created by this tournament," he said.
Building Safer Communities
Community leaders welcomed the initiative, saying it will help reduce idleness among young people while strengthening community unity.
Sports stakeholders also praised the county government for investing in grassroots football, noting that regular competitions provide constructive engagement for youth, improve physical health and create opportunities for talent identification.
With the first matches expected to kick off in the coming weeks, the 2026 Governor's Cup is expected to attract teams from across Uasin Gishu, combining competitive football with a broader campaign to promote peace, fight drug abuse and prepare the county's youth for a brighter future beyond the pitch.
