University Partnership Poised to Transform Higher Education and Economic Growth in Trans Nzoia

A delegation from Nigeria's Bells University of Technology, Ota, on Wednesday delivered a goodwill message from its Founder and Promoter, former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, to Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, reaffirming the institution's commitment to establishing the county's first-ever university.

The high-powered delegation briefed the Governor on progress made since the signing of a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) last year to establish Bells University of Technology in Kitale. The meeting marked the reactivation of the partnership, with both parties expressing optimism that the project is now entering the implementation phase.

Governor Natembeya described the proposed university as a transformative investment that will revolutionize access to higher education while unlocking significant socio-economic opportunities for the county and the wider East African region.

"This university will be a game-changer, especially for children from humble backgrounds. Many families struggle to send their children to faraway towns for university education. This initiative brings quality education closer home, significantly reducing that burden while opening new opportunities for our young people," said Governor Natembeya.

He noted that the university will serve students not only from Trans Nzoia but also neighbouring counties and countries, including Uganda and South Sudan, positioning Kitale as an emerging regional centre for higher education.

The Governor observed that besides offering quality undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, the institution is expected to stimulate economic growth through direct and indirect job creation, increased demand for housing, hospitality, transport, retail trade and other support services.

"The establishment of a university creates an entire ecosystem of economic activity. It attracts investment, stimulates innovation, creates employment opportunities and enhances the overall competitiveness of the county. This is one of the strategic investments that will define the future of Trans Nzoia," he said.

Leading the Nigerian delegation, Bells University Vice Chancellor, Professor Jeremiah Oludele Ojediran, conveyed former President Obasanjo's goodwill message and reaffirmed the University's unwavering commitment to delivering the ambitious project.

"We are delighted to return to Trans Nzoia to re-activate this important partnership with His Excellency Governor Natembeya. Former President Obasanjo remains deeply committed to this initiative and is pleased with the progress made since the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding. We share a common vision of empowering young people through quality education that responds directly to local, national and regional development needs," said Prof. Ojediran.

He disclosed that work on the legal and governance framework required for the establishment of the university is progressing steadily, adding that two representatives from the County Government have already been nominated to serve on the Bells Education Trust, further strengthening institutional collaboration.

Professor Ojediran emphasized that Bells University brings decades of experience in science, technology, engineering and innovation and looks forward to sharing that expertise with Kenya as the institution establishes its first international campus.

Professor Masibo Lumala, who chaired the Trans Nzoia County University Taskforce that conducted extensive public participation on the establishment of a university in the county, welcomed the renewed momentum, saying the Bells University initiative represents a significant milestone in realizing the county's long-held aspiration of becoming a higher education hub.

Professor Lumala, who was also part of the delegation that visited Nigeria last year and held discussions with former President Obasanjo on the proposed university, said the project complements the recommendations made by the County University Taskforce.

"The Taskforce undertook comprehensive consultations across the county and established overwhelming public support for the establishment of a university in Trans Nzoia. Among our key recommendations was the establishment of a public university through a constituent university college under the mentorship of Kibabii University, alongside strategic partnerships capable of accelerating higher education development within the county," he said.

He explained that the proposed Bells University and the envisioned public university are complementary rather than competing initiatives, both aimed at ensuring that Trans Nzoia is no longer among the few counties in Kenya without a university.

"We have continued engaging the Bells University team to develop academic structures, governance systems, curriculum support and institutional frameworks required for the proposed university. Plans are also progressing for former President Obasanjo to acquire the former Moi University Bakhita Campus to host the institution. Today's engagement with Governor Natembeya strengthens our shared commitment to transforming this vision into reality," Prof. Lumala added.

He observed that globally, universities serve as engines of socio-economic transformation by producing skilled human capital, driving research and innovation, supporting entrepreneurship and attracting investment.

"A university is much more than classrooms and lecture halls. It becomes a centre for knowledge creation, innovation and enterprise development. It attracts students, researchers, investors and professionals, creating sustained demand for accommodation, transport, health services, banking, food production and other local businesses. Ultimately, the entire county economy benefits," he noted.

Professor Lumala further observed that the presence of a university would strengthen research in agriculture, environmental conservation, technology, health sciences, teacher education and entrepreneurship—areas that align closely with Trans Nzoia's comparative advantages as one of Kenya's leading agricultural counties.

He said the institution would also reduce the financial burden on thousands of families who currently incur significant costs sending their children to universities in distant counties, while expanding opportunities for local youth to access affordable higher education closer to home.

Education County Executive Committee Member Janerose Mutama described the university project as a landmark investment that will raise educational standards across Trans Nzoia and neighbouring counties.

She noted that Governor Natembeya's strategic leadership, particularly the partnership forged with Bells University of Technology, has laid a strong foundation for delivering the county's first university.

"The establishment of a university will significantly improve access to higher education while creating opportunities for research, innovation and skills development. It will empower our youth to pursue their academic aspirations without the challenges associated with relocating to distant towns," she said.

She added that the institution is expected to become a catalyst for regional development by producing graduates equipped with knowledge and skills required to drive industrialization, technological advancement and sustainable economic growth.

The Nigerian delegation comprised Bells University Legal Officer Ms. Sayo Ayeni and the University's Deputy Registrar and Head of Administration, Mr. Ademola Agiri.

Governor Natembeya was accompanied by Trans Nzoia County Head of Public Service Truphosa Amere, Finance and Economic Planning County Executive Committee Member Dr. Wanjala Pepela and senior county government officials.

Once established, Bells University of Technology will become Trans Nzoia County's first university, marking a historic milestone in the county's educational development and reinforcing its ambition to become a regional centre for higher learning, innovation and inclusive socio-economic transformation.
