Eldoret to Host 2026 Mashujaa Day Celebrations
Uasin Gishu County has been selected to host Kenya's 61st Mashujaa Day celebrations on October 20, 2026, in a major boost for the region's profile and a development expected to inject millions of shillings into the local economy.
Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim announced that the county had officially secured the rights to host the national celebrations, describing the decision as a vote of confidence by the national government in Uasin Gishu's ability to organize an event of national significance.
"This is a proud moment for the people of Uasin Gishu. Hosting Mashujaa Day is not only an honour but also an opportunity to showcase our county's rich heritage, hospitality, agricultural strength, sporting excellence, and growing investment potential," the governor said.
Mashujaa Day, observed annually on October 20, is one of Kenya's most important national holidays, dedicated to celebrating the country's heroes and heroines whose contributions have shaped the nation's history and development.
The announcement places Eldoret, widely known as the City of Champions, at the center of national attention as preparations begin for thousands of visitors expected to attend the celebrations, including President William Ruto, senior government officials, diplomats, business leaders, and Kenyans from across the country.
Beyond the national celebrations, the event is expected to stimulate economic activity across Uasin Gishu. Hotels, restaurants, transport operators, traders, and small businesses are likely to benefit from increased visitor numbers, while the county is expected to accelerate infrastructure improvements ahead of the event.
County officials are also expected to work closely with the national government on logistics, security, transport, sanitation, and venue preparations to ensure the celebrations meet national standards.
Governor Bii noted that the selection reflects growing confidence in Uasin Gishu as a destination capable of hosting high-profile national events, citing the county's expanding infrastructure, strategic location, and reputation as an economic and agricultural hub in the North Rift.
The announcement has been welcomed by residents and business stakeholders, who view the event as an opportunity to market Uasin Gishu's tourism attractions, agricultural sector, investment opportunities, and sporting legacy to a national and international audience.
