Political activity in Endebess Constituency is gathering pace as incumbent MP Dr. Robert Pukose moves to consolidate his support base ahead of the 2027 General Election, while a growing list of challengers intensify grassroots campaigns in what is shaping up to be one of the most competitive parliamentary races in Trans Nzoia County.

Dr. Pukose, a medical surgeon-turned-politician, has represented the constituency since its creation following the promulgation of the 2010 Constitution. He won the inaugural parliamentary seat in the 2013 General Election on the former United Republican Party (URP) ticket, defeating Joshua Mutoto Werunga of New Ford Kenya.

Since then, the legislator has maintained his political influence in the cosmopolitan constituency, where elections have traditionally been determined by delicate ethnic and political alliances.

Endebess is home to the Sabaot and Bukusu communities, alongside other Luhya sub-tribes, the Turkana, Iteso, Kikuyu and other communities. Political analysts say the constituency's demographic balance has made every election highly competitive, with no single community enjoying an outright numerical advantage.

The constituency's name itself reflects its rich cultural history. Among the Sabaot, the name is associated with the phrase "Olee Deebes," meaning a vast flat land or the area at the end of the slopes of Mt. Elgon. Among the Bukusu, the area is traditionally known as Mundebe, referring to a place where their ancestors are believed to have rested or left behind their luggage during migration.

These historical and cultural ties have contributed to intense political competition between the two dominant communities, with leadership often viewed as a symbol of representation and influence.

As preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum, Dr. Pukose has been strengthening his support among the Kalenjin community and other minority groups while highlighting development projects undertaken during his tenure. His allies believe his experience, national connections and development record place him in a strong position to retain the seat.

However, the MP faces stiff competition from several aspirants, among them Pius Gumo, son of former Cabinet Minister Fred Gumo, Chammy Simiyu, Alwin Sasia, Dr. Simon Kapchanga, and former Chief Officer Omari Isaac Ndiema.

Political observers note that while the opposition has attracted several influential figures, their greatest challenge remains presenting a united front against the incumbent.

Some leaders from the Bukusu community have openly urged opposition aspirants to agree on a single consensus candidate, arguing that multiple candidates would divide votes and hand Dr. Pukose an easier path to victory.

On the other hand, some Sabaot leaders have reportedly encouraged aspirants from their community to support the incumbent, saying he should be allowed to complete another term before pursuing higher political office in future elections.

The race recently attracted further attention following allegations that foreigners were being registered as voters using the ongoing Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) voter registration exercise.

Dr. Pukose strongly dismissed the allegations, describing them as false and politically motivated propaganda aimed at tarnishing his reputation.

He maintained that he has never participated in any illegal voter registration scheme and challenged anyone with credible evidence to forward it to investigative agencies instead of spreading unverified claims.

The IEBC also dismissed the allegations, with Trans Nzoia County Election Manager Patrick Wanyama reaffirming that the voter registration exercise remains secure, transparent and strictly limited to eligible Kenyan citizens.

Despite the commission's assurance, some local leaders have called for vigilance, urging the IEBC to investigate all complaints thoroughly to maintain public confidence in the electoral process.

Political strategist Watima Manguliech has appealed to leaders to avoid divisive politics and instead focus on issue-based campaigns centered on integrity, wisdom and service delivery.

He argued that politics should not merely be about defeating opponents but about presenting better ideas and leadership that benefits residents.

Manguliech also challenged opposition leaders to put aside personal ambitions and unite behind one candidate if they hope to mount a formidable challenge against the incumbent.

Several of Dr. Pukose's opponents have, however, dismissed suggestions that they cannot unite, insisting that discussions on coalition-building remain possible as campaigns gather momentum.

Agribusiness expert Pius Gumo has maintained that it is too early to conclude that opposition candidates cannot agree on a common strategy, arguing that political realignments often occur closer to elections.

Meanwhile, TransWASCO Chairman Chammy Simiyu has described the upcoming election as an opportunity for political transformation in Endebess, insisting that the parliamentary seat is open to any qualified candidate and should not be viewed as the preserve of the incumbent.

The contest is also expected to focus heavily on development, land issues and economic empowerment. Endebess, particularly the Chepchoina settlement scheme, has over the years experienced land ownership disputes and agrarian challenges, making political representation a key issue for many residents seeking improved infrastructure, security and public services.

According to the latest electoral statistics, Endebess Constituency has 50,688 registered voters, distributed across Chepchoina Ward (19,068), Endebess Ward (13,846) and Matumbei Ward (13,664).

With campaigns gradually gathering momentum and political alliances continuing to shift, analysts believe the Endebess parliamentary race will be one of the most closely watched contests in Trans Nzoia County as candidates battle to win the confidence of the constituency's diverse electorate ahead of the 2027 General Election.
