Dedan Kimathi Foundation Appeals to President Ruto Over Athi River Home
In an emotional statement, the Foundation's representative, Evelyn Kimathi, expressed disappointment over the development, saying it was difficult to understand why the family was facing the setback despite its continued support for national initiatives.
Evelyn noted that she has been at the forefront of environmental conservation efforts, claiming to have planted more than 1.2 million trees in support of the Government's ambitious target of growing 15 billion trees and achieving 30 per cent national tree cover.
According to her, the Athi River house had been purchased by the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga for Mrs. Mukami Kimathi. She said Raila had paid KSh4.8 million towards the property before his death, leaving an outstanding balance that was never settled, ultimately resulting in the reported repossession.
Evelyn recalled that President Ruto had accorded the late Mukami Kimathi a dignified state-assisted burial, and appealed to the Head of State to extend the same goodwill by helping resolve the matter surrounding the property.
> "I don't know what wrong I have done to this government. I have been in the forefront in making sure President Ruto achieves his ambitious target of 15 billion trees and 30 per cent tree cover. I have planted over 1.2 million trees. They have repaid me by repossessing the Athi River house that Hon. Raila bought for Mrs. Mukami Kimathi. Raila had paid KSh4.8 million and died before completing the balance. President Ruto, you accorded our mother a decent burial. Why don't you please accord her the peace she needs in her death? Raila died as your friend. Please reverse the verdict," Evelyn Kimathi appealed.
The Foundation urged the Government to consider the historical significance of the Kimathi family and explore an amicable solution that preserves the legacy of one of Kenya's foremost independence heroes while bringing closure to the matter.
