DCP Sweeps Ol Kalou By-Election as Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru Wins in Landslide, Crushing UDA Rival

The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) has secured a resounding victory in the Ol Kalou Constituency by-election after its candidate, Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru, was declared the duly elected Member of the National Assembly following a landslide win.

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Returning Officer Antony Njiraine announced that Waweru garnered 35,440 votes, overwhelmingly defeating his closest challenger, Samuel Muchina Nyagah of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), who managed 5,450 votes.

The by-election, conducted on Thursday, July 16, 2026, attracted a voter turnout of 57 percent, with 41,656 ballots cast out of 73,480 registered voters, reflecting strong public participation in the exercise.

The decisive victory cements DCP's growing political influence and delivers a significant electoral setback for the ruling UDA in a constituency that attracted considerable political attention ahead of the 2027 General Election.

According to the official results released by the IEBC, Jubilee Party candidate Wilson Mwaniki Kigwa finished a distant third with 198 votes, followed by Stephen Wanyoike Waithaka of the National Liberal Party (NLP), who garnered 103 votes.

Other candidates received significantly fewer votes, with Timothy Kamau Kariuki (PM) securing 51 votes, Edwin Kariiri Muchiri (PNU) receiving 28 votes, Abdifatah Hussein Abdullahi (FPK) obtaining 19 votes, Edward Mathenge Mwaniki (KMM) getting 16 votes, and Rachael Wangui Njoroge (PDP) finishing with 11 votes.

The outcome gives Waweru a commanding mandate to represent the people of Ol Kalou in the National Assembly, following one of the most one-sided parliamentary by-election victories witnessed in recent years.

In a statement after announcing the results, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commended the electorate and all stakeholders for ensuring a peaceful and credible electoral process.

The Commission thanked the voters of Ol Kalou Constituency, candidates, political parties, election officials, security agencies, election observers, the media, and other stakeholders for their collective role in delivering what it described as a free, fair, and credible by-election.

Political analysts are expected to closely examine the outcome, with the overwhelming margin likely to shape political realignments and campaign strategies as parties intensify preparations for the 2027 General Election. The result is also expected to strengthen DCP's position nationally while raising fresh questions about UDA's electoral support in parts of the Mt. Kenya region.
