Uasin Gishu Ranks Among Kenya’s Top 10 Most Transparent Counties in Budget Survey

 Uasin Gishu County has emerged among the top 10 best-performing counties in Kenya in the 2025 County Budget Transparency Survey (CBTS), earning a score of 76 points in recognition of its efforts to promote accountability, public participation, and openness in governance.

Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim welcomed the ranking, describing it as a significant milestone that reflects the county government's commitment to transparent and people-centered leadership.

The governor said the achievement demonstrates the progress made in strengthening public financial management systems and ensuring residents have access to critical budget information.

"This ranking is a strong affirmation of our commitment to transparent, accountable, and people-centered governance. It reflects the deliberate efforts we have made to improve public participation and ensure prudent management of public resources," said Governor Bii.

According to the survey, Uasin Gishu's performance places it among the leading counties in the country in terms of budget openness and citizen engagement.

Governor Bii attributed the success to collaboration between the county government and civil society organizations that have played a key role in promoting accountability and citizen oversight.

He specifically acknowledged the contribution of the Uasin Gishu CSO Network, The Institute for Social Accountability, and Transparency International for working closely with the county to strengthen transparency initiatives and encourage public participation in governance.

The governor noted that access to budget information empowers residents to understand how public funds are allocated and utilized, thereby enhancing trust between citizens and government institutions.

He reiterated that transparency remains a central pillar of the county's development strategy under the Nguzo Kumi agenda, which seeks to accelerate service delivery and socio-economic transformation across the county.

"As we continue implementing our Nguzo Kumi development agenda, we remain steadfast in building a county that is open, responsive, and focused on delivering meaningful development to every resident," he said.

The recognition comes at a time when counties are under increasing pressure to improve accountability in the use of public resources and enhance citizen participation in decision-making processes.

Governance experts have often cited transparency and public involvement as key ingredients in improving service delivery and ensuring development projects reflect the priorities of local communities.

County officials expressed optimism that the recognition will inspire further reforms aimed at strengthening accountability mechanisms, enhancing public trust, and ensuring effective utilization of public resources.

The latest ranking is expected to boost Uasin Gishu's profile as one of the counties leading the way in promoting open governance and responsible financial management in Kenya.
