Uasin Gishu Boosts Ebola, Disease Preparedness as KEMRI Donates Critical Medical Supplies

The County Government of Uasin Gishu has received a donation of essential disease prevention and infection control products from the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), a move expected to significantly strengthen the county's preparedness and response to public health emergencies.

The donation, comprising four pieces of TB Cides, 40 pieces of KEM RUB Spray, and 42 pieces of KEM GEL, was officially handed over to the county's Department of Health. The products, commercialized through KEMRI's Deputy Director for Enterprise Development, Caroline Wandera, are designed to enhance infection prevention and control measures in health facilities across the county.

The supplies were received by Chief Officers responsible for Preventive and Promotive Services and Clinical Services during a ceremony attended by county health officials and representatives from KEMRI.

Speaking during the handover, Acting Chief Officer for Preventive and Promotive Services Dr. Billy Lubanga lauded KEMRI for its continued support, describing the donation as timely and impactful.

"As part of our ongoing efforts to strengthen disease prevention and laboratory support services, we sincerely thank KEMRI for this timely donation. These products will greatly enhance our capacity to safeguard public health and support our health workers in delivering quality services," said Dr. Lubanga.

Chief Officer for Clinical Services Ambrose Tarus noted that the products would play a vital role in bolstering the county's preparedness against Ebola and other infectious diseases.

"This donation further cements the strong partnership between Uasin Gishu County and KEMRI. The products will be useful not only in Ebola prevention and control but also in other areas of infection prevention and management. We encourage the continuation of such collaborations for the benefit of our communities," Tarus said.

The county officials conveyed their appreciation on behalf of Governor Dr. Jonathan Bii Chelilim, acknowledging KEMRI's commitment to supporting county governments in strengthening healthcare systems and enhancing disease surveillance and response.

KEMRI representatives revealed that similar donations had also been delivered to Busia County as part of a broader initiative aimed at supporting counties in improving disease preparedness and emergency response capabilities.

Uasin Gishu was recognized among counties that have demonstrated strong commitment to disease prevention and public health preparedness through sustained investments in healthcare infrastructure, surveillance systems, and strategic partnerships with health and research institutions.

The donation underscores the growing importance of collaboration between county governments and research institutions in advancing public health, strengthening healthcare systems, and improving emergency preparedness across Kenya.
