THE VALUE OF THE FASHION AND DESIGN BUSINESS IN KENYA
By: Yamara Sandra
The fashion and design industry in Kenya continues to play an important role in economic growth by creating jobs, promoting local talent, and preserving cultural heritage.
Research shows that Kenya’s fashion market is steadily growing due to increased demand for locally made clothing, digital marketing, and the rise of online businesses. Traditional physical stores still dominate the market with a 71.21 percent share, while online retail is growing at an annual rate of 11.31 percent.
Many young Kenyans have ventured into fashion design, tailoring, modeling, and textile production, turning their creativity into successful businesses.
The sector has become a major source of income for thousands of women and young people involved in the production and sale of clothes, shoes, jewelry, and other fashion products.
Kenyan designers continue to embrace modern trends while incorporating African fabrics such as kitenge, ankara, and Maasai-inspired designs. This has helped promote Kenyan culture both locally and internationally through fashion shows, exhibitions, and online platforms.
According to fashion and entrepreneurship expert Mary Wambui, the industry has become a key pillar in empowering young people economically.
“The fashion industry is not only about beauty and style; it is a major contributor to job creation and economic development. It empowers young people to transform their skills into sustainable businesses,” said Wambui.
Cabinet Secretary for Culture and Heritage Salim Mvurya has said that the government recognizes the value of the creative industry in boosting economic empowerment and cultural expression.
“The fashion and design business remains a key driver of economic empowerment and cultural expression, offering promising opportunities for future growth,” said Mvurya.
Industry stakeholders are now calling for increased government support through training programs, affordable financing, and investment in textile manufacturing to further strengthen the sector and enhance its contribution to Kenya’s economy.
