“From Village Roots to National Spotlight: Christopher Kipsang Honored as Journalist of the Year for Life-Saving Health Reporting”

A sense of pride and gratitude reverberated through Nyaru PCEA Church on Monday as celebrated journalist Christopher Kipsang hosted a special thanksgiving service following his historic recognition as Journalist of the Year and winner of the Health Reporting Category at the 2026 Media Excellence Awards (AMEA).

The awards, organized by the Media Council of Kenya, recognized Kipsang for his outstanding feature, “Care in Transit: How Mobile Medical Camps are Saving Lives in Turkana,” a compelling story that highlighted how mobile healthcare programs are reaching underserved communities and transforming lives. The recognition cements Kipsang’s place among Kenya’s most influential journalists, particularly in health reporting, a field in which his work has consistently championed public awareness and the amplification of marginalized voices.

The interdenominational thanksgiving service brought together a diverse gathering of family, colleagues, media practitioners, church leaders, and members of the public. The service was presided over by PCEA Church Moderator and RCEA Iten Parish Leader Samwel Kiptanui, underscoring the unity and shared joy between Kipsang’s home church, PCEA Nyaru, where he grew from Sunday school to youth fellowship, and RCEA Iten, his current spiritual home.

Among the dignitaries in attendance were Elgeyo Marakwet County Assembly Speaker Lawi Kibire, Chepkorio Ward MCA Kimeli Koima, and parliamentary aspirants Micah Kigen, Mangara, and Nancy Barsulai, highlighting the broad recognition of Kipsang’s achievements beyond media circles.

In his address, Kipsang dedicated the accolades to God, his family, mentors, and the communities whose stories have shaped his reporting. “Being the first journalist from my village, Mwen, my church, and Kipsanai Primary School to receive this honor is a humbling reflection of God’s faithfulness,” Kipsang said. “These awards are not just personal milestones—they represent the voices of the communities I serve and the power of storytelling to drive change.”

Kipsang’s feature on mobile medical camps in Turkana received widespread acclaim for its meticulous research, compelling narratives, and deep human impact. The story detailed how healthcare teams travel long distances to remote areas, providing critical services such as vaccinations, maternal care, and disease prevention education, ultimately saving countless lives. His work has been credited with inspiring policy discussions and raising public awareness on health issues that often go unnoticed.

Colleagues and peers lauded Kipsang’s dedication to ethical and impactful journalism. “Christopher has consistently shown that reporting is not just about telling stories—it’s about giving a voice to the voiceless and advocating for the betterment of society,” said a fellow journalist.

The thanksgiving service, marked by hymns, prayers, and heartfelt speeches, was more than a celebration of personal achievement; it was a moment of collective pride for the local community and for health journalism in Kenya. Kipsang’s journey from a small village in Elgeyo Marakwet to national recognition serves as an inspiring reminder that resilience, dedication, and faith can transform dreams into reality.

As the celebrations concluded, it was evident that Christopher Kipsang’s story is far from finished. With his unwavering commitment to spotlighting critical health issues and telling stories that matter, his work continues to inspire the next generation of journalists and reaffirm the power of media to make a tangible difference in people’s lives.
