Uasin Gishu Ramps Up Healthcare Drive as Sambut Health Centre Set for Major Upgrade

Uasin Gishu County has intensified efforts to improve healthcare access and service delivery following a high-level support supervision visit to Sambut Health Centre led by County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Health, Janet Kurgat.

The visit underscored the county government's commitment to strengthening primary healthcare services, enhancing infrastructure, and expanding access to affordable medical care for residents.

Speaking during the tour, Kurgat said regular support supervision plays a critical role in identifying service gaps, monitoring performance, and ensuring health facilities deliver quality care to communities.

“We remain committed to ensuring every resident has access to quality and affordable healthcare services. Through continuous supervision and investment, we are strengthening our facilities and improving health outcomes across the county,” she said.

Established in 1999, Sambut Health Centre serves residents of Sambut and neighboring areas by providing essential primary healthcare and emergency services. The facility has grown over the years with support from development partners, including DANIDA, which contributed significantly to its expansion.

Acting Chief Officer for Preventive and Promotive Services, Dr. Billy Lubanga, described the facility as a strategic health center with enormous growth potential, noting that ongoing investments would help expand services and improve patient care.

Chief Officer for Clinical Services Ambrose Tarus praised healthcare workers for their dedication and professionalism, saying the county government remains focused on strengthening clinical services and ensuring health facilities are adequately equipped.

The County Health Management Team (CHMT) continues to provide technical support and routine supervision to enhance service delivery at the facility. Meanwhile, the Safaricom M-PESA Foundation is collaborating with the county government on plans aimed at upgrading the facility’s infrastructure and boosting its operational capacity.

Serving a catchment population of more than 3,000 residents, Sambut Health Centre is supported by two community health units that play a key role in preventive healthcare, health promotion, and community outreach programs.

The facility is also actively registering residents under the Social Health Authority (SHA) through the Taifa Care programme, a move aimed at expanding access to universal healthcare services.

During the assessment, county health officials noted that infection prevention and control measures at the facility were being effectively implemented, helping maintain a safe environment for both patients and healthcare workers.

In a major boost to emergency and critical care services, the county government announced plans to supply oxygen cylinders to the facility, enhancing its ability to respond to medical emergencies and improve patient outcomes.

The supervision visit was attended by Director of Medical Services Evans Kiprotich, Director of Nursing Services Collete Chirchir, and members of the County Health Management Team.

The latest intervention forms part of Uasin Gishu County’s broader healthcare transformation agenda aimed at strengthening primary healthcare facilities, expanding access to essential services, and advancing universal health coverage across the county.
