Ruto Unveils Major KDF Leadership Shake-Up as Top Generals Promoted and New Commanders Appointed

President William Ruto has effected sweeping changes in the leadership of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), appointing new commanders, promoting senior officers and extending the tenure of the Kenya Navy Commander in a move aimed at strengthening military leadership and operational readiness.

The appointments, announced by the Ministry of Defence, were made following recommendations from the Defence Council chaired by Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya.

Among the key changes, Major General John Maiso Nkoimo has been appointed Deputy Commander of the Kenya Army, replacing Major General Mohamed Nur Hassan, who has retired from military service after a distinguished career.

Before his appointment, Major General Nkoimo served as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) Central Command, where he oversaw military operations and strategic coordination across a vast region of the country.

The Kenya Air Force also witnessed changes, with Brigadier Mohamud Salah Farah, formerly the Base Commander at Laikipia Air Base, appointed as Deputy Air Force Commander.

In a further restructuring of military leadership, Brigadier William Kamoiro was promoted to the rank of Major General and appointed General Officer Commanding Central Command, taking over from Nkoimo.

At Defence Headquarters, Brigadier Peter Kipketer Limo was promoted to Major General and appointed Assistant Chief of Defence Forces responsible for Personnel and Logistics. He succeeds Major General Edward Rugendo, who has been appointed Managing Director of Defence Forces Welfare Services.

The President also extended the term of Major General Paul Owuor Otieno, Commander of the Kenya Navy, by one year, underscoring confidence in his leadership as the country continues to enhance maritime security and safeguard its territorial waters.

Strategic Leadership Transition

Military analysts view the appointments as part of a broader succession and leadership renewal strategy within the KDF. The changes come at a time when Kenya continues to face evolving security challenges, including cross-border threats, terrorism, cyber security risks and regional instability.

The promotions are expected to bolster command structures across the Army, Air Force and Navy while ensuring continuity in military operations, training and modernization programmes.

KDF's Expanding Role

The Kenya Defence Forces remain a key pillar in national and regional security. Beyond defending the country's territorial integrity, the military has played a significant role in peace support missions across Africa, disaster response operations, infrastructure development and humanitarian assistance.

The latest appointments are expected to position the military to effectively respond to emerging security threats while advancing ongoing reforms aimed at enhancing professionalism, welfare and operational effectiveness.

The Ministry of Defence indicated that additional promotions, postings and appointments affecting officers across various formations of the KDF will be communicated as part of the wider leadership changes approved by the Defence Council.

The reshuffle marks one of the most significant changes in the military command structure this year and signals the government's continued focus on strengthening Kenya's defence and security architecture.
