Ndindi Nyoro Raises Red Flag Over Proposed US-Backed Ebola Research Centre in Kenya

Kiharu Member of Parliament Ndindi Nyoro has voiced concern over reported plans by the United States government to establish an Ebola research and response centre in Kenya, warning that the proposal has sparked anxiety among many Kenyans due to the dangers associated with the deadly virus.

Speaking on the matter, the legislator said the government must undertake a thorough assessment of the potential health, safety, and security risks before approving the establishment of such a facility within the country.

Nyoro noted that Ebola remains one of the world's most dangerous infectious diseases and argued that many citizens are uneasy about the prospect of hosting a centre dedicated to researching and responding to the virus.

“Many Kenyans are concerned about the establishment of such a centre in our country. Ebola is a serious disease, and we must be cautious in how we approach such proposals,” he said.

The Kiharu MP further suggested that Ebola-related research and response facilities would be better situated in countries where the disease is endemic or in regions that have previously experienced outbreaks, citing the need to balance scientific advancement with public safety concerns.

His remarks come amid growing public debate over Kenya's role in global disease surveillance and medical research initiatives. Supporters of such facilities argue that they strengthen preparedness, enhance scientific capacity, and improve response to potential outbreaks, while critics fear the risks that could arise from handling highly infectious pathogens.

Nyoro called on the government to engage the public transparently and provide clear information regarding the objectives, safety measures, and expected benefits of the proposed centre before any final decision is made.

The government has yet to issue a detailed response to the concerns raised, as discussions surrounding the proposal continue to attract public attention.
