Kitale National Polytechnic Leads Digital and Agricultural Revolution, Says Chief Principal Dr. Tom Mulati
Kitale National Polytechnic Chief Principal Dr. Tom Mulati has reaffirmed that digital technology is at the heart of modern technical and vocational education, positioning the institution as a leader in skills development and innovation in the North Rift region.
Speaking to Vipasho News during an interview in his office on Monday, Dr. Mulati said the National Polytechnic is continuously integrating emerging workplace technologies into its curriculum to equip learners with the technical, agricultural, and digital skills needed in today's job market.
"Kitale National Polytechnic is actively championing digital inclusion by training youth and women in digital skills, online freelancing, and work-readiness programs to create sustainable digital livelihoods," he said.
On industrial technology transfer, Dr. Mulati noted that the institution is bridging the gap between classroom learning and industry demands through collaboration with Industrial Advisory Committees. This approach ensures trainees are exposed to modern industrial standards and technological advancements.
Located in Trans Nzoia County, Kenya's renowned food basket, the institution is spearheading an agricultural transformation by moving beyond traditional farming methods. Through specialized training in agribusiness, farm mechatronics, and circular economy innovations such as maggot rearing for animal feed, the Polytechnic is equipping young people with climate-smart skills aimed at enhancing regional food security.
"The institution utilizes newly upgraded equipment to impart modern agricultural skills. We have also spearheaded the digitization of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) assessments, enabling experienced professionals to earn formal certification and improve their employability," he added.
Dr. Mulati said his administration is positioning the region's only National Polytechnic as a cornerstone of digital and industrial transformation.
"We have re-engineered technical training with a strong focus on digital connectivity, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), and global job-market readiness. Through the Jitume Digital Labs, state-of-the-art ICT facilities and computers have been installed. These centers integrate digital skills training with the Ajira Digital Program, connecting students and youth to online and remote global job opportunities," he said.
On mechanical and automotive engineering, Dr. Mulati said the Polytechnic is providing critical hands-on training that serves as a catalyst for youth empowerment, employment, and career development.
He noted that the institution's modern facilities offer learners practical exposure that bridges the gap between theory and industry requirements. The department equips students with market-driven skills ranging from artisan-level training to Higher National Diploma programs.
The Head of the Mechanical and Automotive Engineering Department, Mr. Jimmy Wafula, said that under Dr. Mulati's leadership, the institution has transformed the automotive and transport sector in Trans Nzoia by providing competency-based education aligned with industry needs.
He explained that Mechanical Production focuses on machining, fabrication, and manufacturing processes, while Agricultural Mechanics specializes in farm machinery, power mechanics, and heavy-duty agricultural equipment.
Students are also trained in vehicle technology, engine diagnostics, and motor vehicle mechanics, while those pursuing welding and fabrication receive practical instruction in gas and arc welding, cutting, and grinding.
According to Dr. Mulati, the institution's workshops rank among the best in the region, featuring modern equipment such as CNC machines, engine testing bays, and simulation technologies that prepare graduates for the demands of the modern workforce.
