ICC Suspends Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan Over Sexual Misconduct Allegations

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has suspended its Chief Prosecutor, Karim Khan, following allegations of sexual misconduct involving a member of his office.

The decision was announced on Monday by the Assembly of States Parties (ASP), the ICC's governing body. According to the assembly, Khan will remain suspended pending the completion of ongoing investigations and deliberations.

In a statement, the ASP Bureau emphasized that the suspension should not be interpreted as a determination of guilt.

"The Bureau emphasizes that this suspension is not an indication of the final outcome," the statement said.

The Bureau explained that the move was intended to ensure that investigations proceed independently, fairly, and without interference.

"The investigations and deliberations are still ongoing," the ASP added, stressing that the decision should not be viewed as a final judgment against Khan.

Governance experts note that international institutions such as the ICC are expected to uphold the highest ethical and professional standards. Temporary suspensions are often used to protect the integrity of investigations and maintain public confidence in such organizations.

Khan had already stepped aside from his duties in May 2025 after the allegations surfaced. He has denied any wrongdoing and continues to challenge the accusations.

The case has drawn global attention due to Khan's prominent role in international justice, particularly after he sought arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant in connection with the Gaza conflict.

Legal and political analysts describe the suspension as a significant moment for the ICC.

One international law expert stated, "The ICC must demonstrate accountability and transparency to preserve global trust."

The suspension takes immediate effect as investigations continue.
