Hope After Tragedy: Oscar Sudi Donates Posho Mill to Kapseret Father Who Lost Hand in Accident
What began as an ordinary day of work turned into a life-altering tragedy for 48-year-old Timothy Saina from Megun Village in Kapseret Constituency when a grass-cutting machine accident left him with severe injuries that resulted in the loss of his left hand.
For years, Saina had earned a living as a cattle herder, relying on the physically demanding job to provide food, pay school fees, and meet the daily needs of his family. However, the accident abruptly ended his ability to continue working in the profession he had depended on for much of his adult life.
The devastating injury left him facing an uncertain future. With no steady source of income and a family looking up to him for support, Saina found himself struggling to make ends meet.
His situation caught the attention of Kapseret Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi, who on Friday stepped in to support the father of several children by donating a posho mill to help him establish a new source of livelihood.
Speaking during the handover, Sudi said the initiative was aimed at restoring Saina's dignity and helping him regain financial independence after the accident robbed him of his primary source of income.
"In 2025, Timothy Saina lost his left hand in a grass-cutting machine accident. The injury ended his work as a cattle herder, which had been his main source of livelihood for many years. Since then, providing for his family has been extremely difficult," said Sudi.
The legislator noted that while the donation could not undo the pain and challenges caused by the accident, it would offer Saina an opportunity to rebuild his life and support his family through a sustainable business venture.
"I gave him a posho mill because he can no longer do manual labour. The machine will help him generate income, pay school fees for his children, and provide for his family. It won't replace the hand he lost, but it will give him a way to earn a living without depending on others," he said.
Sudi emphasized the need for leaders to support vulnerable members of society, particularly those whose lives have been disrupted by accidents, illness, or other unforeseen circumstances.
"We must stand with people facing difficult situations. Empowering them with tools to earn a living is more sustainable than offering short-term assistance. Our goal is to help them become self-reliant and regain hope," he added.
The donated posho mill is expected to serve residents from Megun and neighboring villages, providing milling services while generating income for Saina and his family.
Local residents welcomed the gesture, describing it as a practical intervention that would have a direct impact on the family's welfare. Many said the business would not only benefit Saina but also provide a convenient service to farmers and households in the area.
Community members who attended the event praised the MP for focusing on empowerment rather than handouts, noting that income-generating projects have the potential to transform lives in the long term.
For Saina, the donation represents a fresh start after months of uncertainty and emotional hardship. Friends and relatives say the accident had left him worried about how he would continue supporting his family and educating his children.
The father expressed gratitude for the support, saying the posho mill would enable him to earn an income despite his physical limitations.
The incident has also sparked conversations about workplace safety and the risks faced by workers operating agricultural machinery without adequate protective equipment and training.
Community leaders have called for greater awareness on occupational safety, particularly in rural areas where many residents depend on farming and livestock-related activities for their livelihoods.
They also urged government agencies, employers, and community organizations to strengthen support systems for individuals who suffer life-changing injuries, including access to rehabilitation, financial assistance, and economic empowerment programs.
As the posho mill begins operations, Saina hopes the business will help him restore stability to his family and provide a brighter future for his children.
For a man whose life changed in an instant, the donation marks not just the start of a business venture but a renewed sense of hope, resilience, and determination to overcome adversity.
The story of Timothy Saina serves as a reminder that while accidents can alter the course of a person's life, timely support and community solidarity can help restore dignity and create new opportunities for those facing hardship.
