DCC KIBET RALLIES WORKERS TO PRIORITIZE FITNESS FOR BETTER MENTAL HEALTH
By Sonia Mitchel
Igembe South Deputy County Commissioner Noah Kibet has urged workers and members of the public to embrace regular physical exercise as a key step toward improving mental health and overall well-being.
Speaking at his office in Igembe South Sub-County, Kibet noted that increasing work-related pressures and modern lifestyle demands are contributing to rising stress levels, negatively affecting productivity in many households across the country.
He emphasized that physical activity plays a crucial role in reducing stress, improving mood, and enhancing concentration at the workplace.
"Physical fitness is essential for both our physical and mental well-being. Regular exercise helps relieve stress, prevent burnout, and improve our ability to cope with daily challenges," said Kibet.
The Deputy County Commissioner encouraged workers to dedicate time to activities such as walking, jogging, cycling, stretching, and sports, noting that even small daily exercise routines can significantly improve health outcomes.
Kibet also called on employers to support workplace wellness programs and create opportunities for staff to engage in physical activities, saying this would boost productivity and improve employee well-being.
According to the World Health Organization, adults should engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity each week to help reduce the risk of depression and lifestyle-related diseases.
Studies conducted in Kenya have also indicated a rise in stress-related illnesses among urban workers, largely attributed to sedentary lifestyles and limited physical activity.
The DCC further urged the public to prioritize mental health awareness and seek professional help whenever they experience prolonged stress or emotional challenges.
"Maintaining good mental health is a shared responsibility. A healthy community leads to better productivity and national development," he said.
Kibet emphasized the importance of prevention, awareness, and consistency in exercise habits, urging people of all age groups to make physical activity a regular part of their daily lives for long-term health and well-being.
