Eldoret National Polytechnic and Mama Mazingira Explore Transformative Partnership on Climate Action, Disability Innovation, and Social Inclusion
In a significant step toward advancing sustainable development, environmental conservation, disability inclusion, and gender-responsive programming, the Chief Principal of Eldoret National Polytechnic, Dr. Charles Koech, hosted Dr. Roseline Arshley, the Founder of the Women Leadership Agenda Association (WOLAA) and Lead of the Green Apple Community, popularly known across the country as Mama Mazingira, for a strategic consultative meeting aimed at exploring areas of collaboration and partnership.
The meeting brought together a shared vision of empowering communities through innovation, education, environmental stewardship, and inclusive development. Discussions centered on identifying practical initiatives that can create lasting impact while providing students with opportunities to acquire hands-on skills and real-world experience.
At the heart of the engagement was the growing need for institutions and community organizations to work together in addressing emerging environmental, social, and economic challenges through innovative and sustainable solutions.
Advancing Climate Action Through Acacia Senegal Propagation
One of the key areas of discussion was climate action, with particular focus on the propagation and commercialization of Acacia senegal, a drought-resistant tree species known for producing gum arabic, one of the world's most valuable natural products used in food processing, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and industrial manufacturing.
The leaders explored the potential of establishing collaborative projects that would support the cultivation of Acacia senegal while developing sustainable value chains around the tree. Such initiatives would not only contribute to environmental conservation and climate resilience but also create economic opportunities for local communities and young people.
The proposed partnership seeks to leverage the institution's technical expertise, student innovation, and community outreach programs to promote tree planting, environmental restoration, and green enterprise development.
Speaking during the meeting, Dr. Arshley emphasized the importance of investing in climate-smart initiatives that simultaneously protect the environment and improve livelihoods.
She noted that climate change continues to pose serious threats to communities across Kenya, making it necessary for institutions, innovators, and environmental advocates to work together in developing sustainable solutions that can benefit both present and future generations.
Disability Inclusion Through Innovative Mobility Solutions
Another major highlight of the discussions was the Mazingira/PWDs Bus Innovation, a groundbreaking concept aimed at transforming mobility and accessibility for persons with disabilities through environmentally friendly transport solutions.
The initiative envisions the development of a climate-smart mobility system designed to address the transportation challenges faced by persons with disabilities while integrating green technologies and sustainable design principles.
The concept aligns with global efforts to create inclusive transport systems that ensure equal access to education, employment opportunities, healthcare services, and social participation for all members of society.
Dr. Arshley observed that persons with disabilities often face significant barriers in accessing safe, affordable, and accessible transportation. She emphasized that innovative solutions are needed to bridge these gaps and enable greater independence and inclusion.
The collaboration presents an opportunity for students and faculty at Eldoret National Polytechnic to contribute to research, design, prototyping, and implementation of practical technologies that can improve the quality of life for persons with disabilities.
The initiative is also expected to provide a platform for nurturing innovation among students while exposing them to real-life challenges that require creative problem-solving and multidisciplinary collaboration.
Strengthening Gender Mainstreaming and Support for Teenage Mothers
The meeting further explored opportunities for advancing gender mainstreaming initiatives, with special attention given to supporting neglected teenage mothers and vulnerable young women.
Both leaders acknowledged the social and economic challenges faced by many teenage mothers, including limited access to education, skills development opportunities, mentorship, and economic empowerment programs.
Through collaborative interventions, the proposed partnership seeks to create pathways that will enable young mothers to rebuild their lives, access training opportunities, and become economically self-reliant.
The discussions highlighted the importance of creating supportive environments that empower women and girls to realize their full potential regardless of their circumstances.
Dr. Arshley, whose work has consistently focused on empowering women, youth, and marginalized groups, reiterated the need for institutions to play a proactive role in promoting gender equality and social inclusion.
She emphasized that empowering women and girls is not only a social responsibility but also a critical driver of sustainable development and community transformation.
Building Practical Skills Through Community-Based Learning
A major outcome of the meeting was the shared commitment to creating opportunities that connect classroom learning with community impact.
Eldoret National Polytechnic has continued to position itself as a center of excellence in technical and vocational education by promoting innovation, entrepreneurship, and practical training. Through partnerships such as the one being explored with WOLAA and the Green Apple Community, students stand to benefit from experiential learning opportunities that expose them to real-world challenges and solutions.
The proposed initiatives are expected to provide students with opportunities to participate in environmental conservation projects, social innovation programs, disability inclusion initiatives, and community development activities.
Such engagements will enable learners to apply technical knowledge in practical settings while contributing positively to society.
Appreciation and Commitment to Collaboration
Dr. Arshley expressed her gratitude for the warm hospitality extended to her during the visit and welcomed the opportunity to collaborate with the institution as its environmental partner.
She commended Eldoret National Polytechnic for its commitment to innovation, skills development, and community engagement, noting that institutions of higher learning have a critical role to play in advancing sustainable development goals.
"I am encouraged by the institution's openness to collaboration and its commitment to creating solutions that benefit both students and the wider community. Through strategic partnerships, we can achieve greater impact in climate action, disability inclusion, and social empowerment," she said.
In response, Chief Principal Dr. Charles Koech thanked Mama Mazingira for her visit and for her dedication to environmental conservation and community transformation.
He reaffirmed the institution's commitment to supporting initiatives that equip students with practical skills while addressing pressing societal challenges.
Dr. Koech emphasized that the Polytechnic remains focused on producing graduates who are not only technically competent but also socially responsible and capable of driving sustainable development.
He noted that partnerships with organizations that share similar values provide an important avenue for enhancing innovation, research, and community service.
Looking Ahead
As discussions progress, the anticipated partnership between Eldoret National Polytechnic and the Women Leadership Agenda Association is expected to unlock new opportunities for innovation, environmental conservation, social inclusion, and community empowerment.
The collaboration reflects a growing recognition that sustainable solutions emerge when educational institutions, community organizations, innovators, and development partners work together toward common goals.
With climate action, disability inclusion, gender empowerment, and youth development at the center of the proposed initiatives, the partnership has the potential to become a model for transformative collaboration that delivers meaningful and lasting impact across communities.
The June 9 meeting marks the beginning of what both parties hope will be a productive journey toward building a greener, more inclusive, and more sustainable future for Kenya.
