Political Rift Escalates as Ichung’wah, Kang’ata Trade Barbs in Public

A fresh political storm is brewing after Kimani Ichung’wah, the National Assembly Majority Leader, publicly criticized Irungu Kang’ata, accusing him of hypocrisy and misleading claims.

In a strongly worded statement, Ichung’wah dismissed allegations by Kang’ata that he had been exerting pressure on the Murang’a governor. He clarified that remarks he made earlier at Kenneth Matiba Hospital were not intended as pressure, but rather as a public call-out of what he described as inconsistent political behavior.

“We know each other well,” Ichung’wah stated, referencing past interactions between the two leaders. He revisited a prior meeting in Lavington during an impeachment period, alleging that Kang’ata had previously exerted political pressure in pursuit of higher office, including a bid for Deputy President.

The Majority Leader further accused Kang’ata of dragging his name into political disputes to gain favor with Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. He warned the governor against “name dropping” and suggested that such tactics were aimed at sidelining competitors.

In a dramatic turn, Ichung’wah hinted at undisclosed details from their past dealings, including alleged issues surrounding Murang’a county resources. He cautioned that revealing such information publicly would not be in Kang’ata’s interest.

“I have chosen this public response since you chose to use that same route,” he added, signaling that the dispute had fully moved into the public arena.

The exchange highlights deepening tensions within political ranks, particularly in the Mt. Kenya region, where alliances and rivalries continue to shape the evolving power dynamics.

Governor Kang’ata has yet to issue a formal response to the allegations.
