Collaboration Key to Economic Growth and Job Creation, Says Uasin Gishu KNCCI Chairman on Labour Day

Uasin Gishu Chamber of Commerce Chairman Willy Kenei has called for renewed collaboration between workers, businesses, and government institutions to accelerate economic growth and job creation as the county joined the rest of the country in marking Labour Day.

In a detailed statement released on May 1, Kenei paid tribute to the resilience, hard work, and determination of workers across all sectors, describing them as the backbone of Uasin Gishu’s economy. He noted that from small-scale traders to large enterprises, the collective effort of the workforce continues to sustain livelihoods and drive development in the region.

“Labour Day is a powerful reminder of the dignity of work and the vital role played by every individual in building our economy,” Kenei said. “We celebrate not only employees but also entrepreneurs and innovators who take risks, create jobs, and open new opportunities for our people.”

Kenei highlighted the significant role played by the private sector in fostering economic stability, especially in the face of global and local challenges. He commended businesses in Uasin Gishu for demonstrating adaptability and innovation, which he said has helped cushion communities and maintain productivity.

At the same time, he acknowledged the challenges facing workers and enterprises, including rising costs of doing business, unemployment, and evolving market demands. He urged stakeholders to work together to address these issues through policy support, skills development, and investment in sustainable industries.

The chairman reaffirmed the Chamber of Commerce’s commitment to advocating for a more conducive business environment, emphasizing the need for policies that encourage investment, support small and medium-sized enterprises, and promote fair labour practices.

“We must continue to create an environment where businesses can thrive and workers can access decent and meaningful employment,” he said. “Empowering our workforce through training, innovation, and inclusivity will be key to unlocking our full economic potential.”

Kenei also called on young people to embrace entrepreneurship and skills development as pathways to economic empowerment, noting that the future of the county depends on a dynamic and forward-thinking workforce.

He further urged both public and private sector leaders to strengthen partnerships that will drive infrastructure development, improve access to markets, and enhance productivity across key sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, and trade.

“As we commemorate this day, let us recommit ourselves to unity, hard work, and shared prosperity,” Kenei added. “Together, we can build a stronger, more inclusive economy that benefits every resident of Uasin Gishu.”
