The Chief Executive Officer of Cherangany Hospital, Silas Kisang, joined hundreds of runners in this year’s Eldoret City Marathon, using the platform to advocate for preventive healthcare and the importance of regular exercise.

Kisang, who leads the Level 5 Cherangany Hospital based in Kitale, participated in the 10-kilometre race and described the experience as both energizing and impactful. He emphasized that physical activity plays a crucial role in reducing the burden of disease, particularly age-related conditions that continue to strain healthcare systems.

“Many of the cases we handle arise from preventable conditions,” Kisang said. “Regular exercise helps people maintain good health and reduces unnecessary hospital visits. It is important for individuals to stay active and prioritize their well-being.”

Cherangany Hospital serves communities across Trans Nzoia County and offers a wide range of services, including inpatient care, radiology, intensive care, and emergency treatment. According to Kisang, encouraging healthier lifestyles is part of the hospital’s broader mission to shift focus from treatment to prevention.

Also participating in the marathon was John Ruto, a hospital staff member who completed the 10-kilometre race for the third time. He credited consistent training, including morning and evening runs, for his successful finish.

“The day has been fantastic. We started early and completed the race without injuries,” Ruto said. “Exercise is vital for overall health. It helps the body eliminate toxins and reduces the risk of diseases like hypertension and diabetes, which are becoming increasingly common.”

Ruto further urged the public to combine regular physical activity with routine medical checkups, noting that early detection of illnesses significantly improves treatment outcomes. “If you catch a condition early, it can be managed effectively before it progresses,” he added.

The Cherangany Hospital team has been actively involved in the marathon over the years, not only as participants but also as providers of medical support, including paramedics and first aid services during the event.

This year’s marathon, themed around climate action, once again highlighted the intersection between environmental awareness and community health. Participants and healthcare professionals alike called for more such events to be organized regularly to promote fitness and early disease detection among residents of Eldoret and beyond.

Health experts continue to stress that adopting simple habits—such as routine exercise and annual medical checkups—can significantly reduce the prevalence of chronic illnesses and improve quality of life across communities.
