Cherangany Hospital Champions Mental Wellness and Leadership Resilience in Landmark NGAO Forum

Trans Nzoia County’s top National Government Administrative Officers (NGAO) convened in Kitale for a high-impact health and wellness forum organized by Cherangany Hospital, marking a significant step toward strengthening the well-being and effectiveness of public service leadership.

Held at Sirwo Resort, the forum brought together a distinguished delegation that included the County Commissioner, Deputy County Commissioners (DCCs), Assistant County Commissioners (ACCs), and Chiefs from across the county. The session focused on critical yet often overlooked aspects of leadership—mental health, stress management, substance abuse prevention, and non-communicable (lifestyle) diseases.

Medical professionals from Cherangany Hospital led a series of in-depth and interactive discussions, highlighting the increasing burden of mental health challenges in demanding administrative roles. The experts emphasized that public officers often operate under immense pressure, making them vulnerable to stress-related conditions, burnout, and unhealthy coping mechanisms.

Participants were equipped with practical tools to manage stress effectively, including techniques for maintaining work-life balance, recognizing early signs of mental distress, and seeking timely support. The sessions also addressed the dangers of substance abuse, with facilitators urging administrators to adopt healthier coping strategies and serve as role models within their communities.

In addition, the forum explored the rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular conditions—illnesses closely linked to modern lifestyles. The medical team encouraged preventive approaches, including regular health check-ups, proper nutrition, physical activity, and reduced alcohol and tobacco consumption.

Broadening the scope of the discussion beyond health, the forum featured a compelling presentation on financial discipline and retirement preparedness by Mr. Oyugi from Active Hub. His session resonated strongly with participants, as he underscored the importance of long-term financial planning, savings culture, and investment strategies to ensure stability beyond active service. He challenged officers to take control of their financial futures early and avoid common pitfalls that lead to insecurity after retirement.

The event was officially graced by the Director of Cherangany Hospital, Dr. Kiptoo, who attended on behalf of the Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Silas Kisang. In his remarks, Dr. Kiptoo reaffirmed the hospital’s commitment to community outreach and preventive healthcare, noting that empowering leaders with knowledge ultimately benefits the wider society they serve.

Also in attendance was Senior Deputy County Commissioner Mr. Cheboi from Kiminini Sub County, representing the County Commissioner, Mr. Oyagi. He commended the initiative, noting that the well-being of administrators is critical to effective governance and service delivery.

The seamless organization of the forum was credited to Marketing Consultant Mr. Joseph Bor, whose efforts brought together stakeholders for what participants described as a timely, insightful, and transformative engagement.

As the forum concluded, there was a shared sense of renewed awareness and commitment among NGAO officers to prioritize their mental, physical, and financial health. The initiative by Cherangany Hospital stands out as a model for integrating wellness into leadership, reinforcing the idea that resilient leaders are the foundation of strong and responsive governance.
