Maraga Slams Fuel Price Hike, Warns of Rising Cost of Living
Former Chief Justice David Maraga has condemned the latest fuel price increase announced by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA), warning that the move will worsen inflation and push the cost of living beyond the reach of many Kenyans.
Speaking during a prayer breakfast meeting for magistrates and advocates from the Law Society of Kenya South West Branch in Kisii town, Maraga said the increase in pump prices would have a direct impact on the prices of essential goods and services across the country.
EPRA announced that a litre of petrol will now retail at Sh214.25, up from Sh206.97, while diesel prices increased to Sh242.92 from Sh196.63. The new prices will take effect between May 15 and June 14 before the next monthly review.
Maraga noted that although the ongoing Middle East crisis has disrupted global fuel supplies and contributed to price fluctuations internationally, fuel remains cheaper in neighbouring countries than in Kenya.
He questioned the government’s handling of the energy sector, saying Kenyans were being subjected to unnecessary economic hardship at a time when many households are already struggling with high living costs.
The former Chief Justice also challenged judicial officers and lawyers to uphold integrity and accountability in their professional conduct, noting that corruption and poor leadership continue to slow the country’s progress.
“The legal profession demands honesty and responsibility, especially when dealing with clients’ finances and matters of justice,” Maraga said.
The prayer breakfast brought together advocates from Kisii, Nyamira, Homabay, Migori and Kilgoris regions.
South West Branch Chairperson Winnie Mireri said the annual gathering provides an opportunity for legal practitioners to seek God’s guidance as they continue discharging their duties in society.
