Maiyo’s Re-Election Sparks Celebration as Leaders Rally Behind Teachers’ Champion in Turbo

A jubilant mood filled Sugoi village in Turbo Constituency as education stakeholders, political leaders, and teachers gathered for a thanksgiving ceremony honoring the re-election of Elijah Maiyo Kimeli as Executive Secretary of the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), Uasin Gishu branch.

The colorful event, held at Kimeli’s home in Centre Kwanza, drew a high-profile delegation that underscored the significance of his leadership within the education sector. Among those present were Principal Secretary for Education Julius Bitok, Soy Member of Parliament David Kiplagat, KUPPET Vice Chair Julius Kimurgor, Members of the County Assembly, and officials from the Ministry of Education.

Leaders who spoke at the event praised Kimeli’s leadership track record, describing his re-election as a clear vote of confidence from teachers across the county. They emphasized the critical role of strong union leadership in advocating for teachers’ welfare, professionalism, and improved working conditions.



Addressing the gathering, Bitok lauded Kimeli’s dedication and commitment to service, noting that his continued leadership comes at a pivotal time for education reforms in the country. He expressed optimism that Kimeli would strengthen collaboration between teachers and the government to improve learning outcomes.

“This is a well-deserved victory. Your leadership reflects resilience, dedication, and a deep understanding of the needs of teachers. We are confident you will continue to steer the union in the right direction,” Bitok said.

Soy MP Kiplagat echoed these sentiments, highlighting that Kimeli’s re-election was not only an व्यक्तिगत achievement but also a reflection of unity among teachers in Uasin Gishu. He urged educators to remain supportive of their union leadership to ensure their voices remain strong and impactful.



“This achievement reflects the strong confidence teachers have in his leadership. It is a sign of trust that has been earned through hard work and commitment. We wish him continued success as he serves our educators,” Kiplagat stated.

KUPPET Vice Chair Kimurgor and other union officials also reaffirmed their support, pledging to work closely with Kimeli to address key issues affecting teachers, including career progression, remuneration, and working conditions.

In an emotional address, Kimeli thanked teachers, leaders, and his family for their unwavering support throughout his journey. He acknowledged the responsibility that comes with his position and pledged to serve with integrity, transparency, and dedication.

“I sincerely thank all teachers for believing in me and giving me another opportunity to serve. This victory is not mine alone—it belongs to all of us. I promise not to let you down. I will work tirelessly to defend your rights, improve your welfare, and ensure that your voices are heard at all levels,” he said.



Kimeli further called for unity among teachers, emphasizing that collective action and cooperation would be key in addressing challenges facing the profession and advancing the quality of education in the region.

The thanksgiving ceremony featured prayers, songs, and celebrations, reflecting both gratitude and hope for the future. Leaders present reiterated their commitment to supporting the education sector, noting that empowered teachers are essential to national development.
