Kalonzo Musyoka Lauds Kenyan Media for Courage on World Press Freedom Day
Opposition leader Kalonzo Musyoka has paid tribute to journalists and media practitioners across Kenya, praising their courage and resilience in the face of growing challenges to press freedom.
In a statement marking World Press Freedom Day, Kalonzo commended members of the media for their unwavering commitment to truth and their role in amplifying the voices of ordinary citizens.
“Today, we celebrate and honour the men and women of the media who stand firm in defence of truth and the voice of the people,” he said. “Your dedication to telling the stories that matter, even under threat and intimidation, reflects the highest ideals of democracy.”
He specifically highlighted the conduct of journalists during the Gen Z protests of 2024, noting that despite government pressure and the temporary shutdown of major media houses, reporters continued to inform the public.
“We saw your bravery when media outlets such as KTN, NTV, and Citizen TV faced closure for simply doing their job. Yet, you remained steadfast,” Kalonzo stated.
The former vice president emphasized that media freedom is constitutionally protected under Article 34, while freedom of expression is guaranteed under Article 33. He urged authorities to respect these provisions and ensure journalists can operate without interference.
“To our media fraternity, we stand with you. We see you. And we will continue to defend your right to work freely, without fear or intimidation,” he added.
Kalonzo concluded his message by wishing all journalists a meaningful World Press Freedom Day, reaffirming the opposition’s support for a free and independent press as a cornerstone of accountability and good governance.
