Eldoret Diocese Welcomes New Apostolic Administrator Sagwe Amid Leadership Transition

The Catholic Diocese of Eldoret on Wednesday marked a significant moment as it officially welcomed Apostolic Administrator Joseph Obanyi Sagwe at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Cathedral in a ceremony attended by clergy, religious leaders, and faithful.

The reception comes just days after his appointment by Pope Leo XIV to oversee the diocese following a leadership transition.

Sagwe, who also serves as Bishop of the Diocese of Kakamega, assumes the role on an interim basis after the transfer of former Eldoret Bishop Dominic Kimengich to the Archdiocese of Mombasa.

During the ceremony, faithful expressed optimism that the new administrator will provide steady leadership and continuity in pastoral programs as the diocese awaits the appointment of a substantive bishop. Church leaders noted that the role of an Apostolic Administrator is critical in ensuring smooth governance, spiritual guidance, and uninterrupted church operations during such transitions.

In his new assignment, Sagwe is expected to oversee both pastoral and administrative affairs, working closely with clergy and lay faithful to sustain ongoing initiatives within the diocese. His experience in church leadership, including previous administrative roles, is seen as key in guiding the Eldoret diocese through this transitional period.

The Diocese of Eldoret, headquartered at Sacred Heart Cathedral, remains one of the key Catholic jurisdictions in Kenya, serving a large and growing population of believers within the ecclesiastical province of Kisumu.

The event at the cathedral was marked by prayers, hymns, and a reaffirmation of unity among the faithful as they welcomed their new shepherd and committed to supporting his mission.
