Pope Leo XIV Appoints Bishop Obanyi to Oversee Eldoret Diocese

In a move aimed at ensuring continuity of leadership, Pope Leo XIV has appointed Joseph Obanyi, the Bishop of Catholic Diocese of Kakamega, as the Apostolic Administrator of the Catholic Diocese of Eldoret.

The appointment, announced by the Holy See, entrusts Bishop Obanyi with the pastoral and administrative care of the Eldoret diocese during a period of transition. As Apostolic Administrator, he will oversee the day-to-day running of the diocese, ensuring stability and continuity in its spiritual and organizational life until a substantive bishop is appointed.

Bishop Obanyi, who has led the Kakamega diocese since 2014, is widely regarded for his pastoral experience and steady leadership. His temporary assignment to Eldoret reflects the Vatican’s confidence in his ability to guide the faithful and clergy through this interim period.

The role of Apostolic Administrator is a significant one within the Catholic Church, often given during times of vacancy or special circumstances in a diocese. It ensures that essential functions of the Church continue uninterrupted, including the administration of sacraments, clergy assignments, and pastoral outreach.

Bishop Obanyi is expected to assume his duties in Eldoret immediately while continuing to serve in Kakamega, balancing both responsibilities as directed by the Vatican.

The appointment marks a new chapter for the Eldoret diocese, as the faithful look ahead with anticipation and trust in the Church’s leadership during this transitional phase.
