Soy MP David Kiplagat, PS Kiprono Rono Support Over 100 Mama Mbogas at Ziwa Market

Soy Member of Parliament David Kiplagat has stepped up efforts to support small-scale traders after leading the distribution of umbrellas to more than 100 mama mbogas at Ziwa Market in a move aimed at improving their working conditions.

The initiative was carried out in collaboration with Principal Secretary for Agriculture Kiprono Rono, underscoring a broader government commitment to uplift informal traders who form the backbone of Kenya’s local food supply chain.

During the event, the leaders engaged directly with traders, listening to their concerns and challenges, many of which revolve around exposure to harsh weather conditions, limited infrastructure, and inconsistent income streams. The distribution of umbrellas is intended to provide immediate relief by protecting both traders and their produce from extreme sun and rainfall.

Speaking at Ziwa Market, Kiplagat said the intervention reflects a people-centered approach to development, focused on practical solutions that directly impact livelihoods.

“Mama mbogas play a vital role in our economy and in ensuring that households have access to fresh and affordable food. Supporting them is not just an act of goodwill, but a strategic investment in our communities,” he said.

He added that creating a dignified and conducive working environment for traders is essential in enhancing productivity and sustaining small businesses, particularly in informal markets that serve a majority of residents.

PS Rono echoed the sentiments, noting that the national government remains committed to strengthening agricultural value chains by supporting all actors, including small-scale vendors who link farmers to consumers.

“This kind of support may appear simple, but it has a significant impact. By protecting traders and their goods, we reduce post-harvest losses and improve income stability for these hardworking Kenyans,” said Rono.

Traders at the market welcomed the initiative, describing it as timely and impactful. Many noted that operating under extreme weather conditions often leads to losses, especially for perishable goods such as vegetables and fruits. The umbrellas are expected to not only provide shade but also enhance the overall appearance and organization of the market.

Local leaders and officials present during the exercise highlighted the importance of continued collaboration between national and local government structures in addressing the needs of grassroots entrepreneurs.

Kiplagat reaffirmed his commitment to rolling out more empowerment programs targeting small-scale traders, including infrastructure improvements, access to affordable credit, and capacity-building initiatives.

“As leaders, we must continue to listen and respond to the needs of our people. This is just one of many steps we are taking to ensure that no one is left behind in our development agenda,” he said.

The initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to recognize and support the critical role played by mama mbogas in sustaining Kenya’s economy, strengthening food security, and providing employment opportunities at the community level.
