Mountain Bongo Comeback: Kenya Welcomes Rare Antelope Home from Czech Republic

Kenya has received a major boost in its wildlife conservation efforts following the repatriation of four critically endangered Mountain Bongos from the Czech Republic.

The rare antelopes arrived at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, where Erustus Kanga, Director General of the Kenya Wildlife Service, assured the public of enhanced protection measures to secure the species’ future.

Dr. Kanga said KWS has put in place robust security and conservation strategies to ensure the Mountain Bongos not only survive but thrive. He noted that sustained efforts over the past three years have already seen the population grow significantly.

“We have grown the number of the Mountain Bongos from under 50 in the last three years, and with the arrival of the four from abroad, we will seek to increase the numbers further from the current 102 plus the extra four to a bigger number in future,” he said.

The reception ceremony was led by Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Musalia Mudavadi, alongside Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife Rebecca Miano, underscoring the government’s commitment to restoring endangered species.

The Mountain Bongo, a rare forest antelope native to Kenya, has faced severe threats from habitat loss, poaching, and disease, pushing it to the brink of extinction. Conservationists see the repatriation program as a critical step toward rebuilding a sustainable population in its natural habitat.

Officials say the latest addition marks another milestone in Kenya’s broader wildlife recovery agenda, with hopes that continued partnerships and conservation initiatives will secure the long-term survival of the iconic species.
