Matatu Owners Announce Fare Hikes Following Fuel Price Surge

Public transport fares are set to rise across the country after the Matatu Owners Association announced an increase in charges following a sharp spike in fuel prices.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Association’s President, Albert Karakacha, said the recent 25 percent increase in fuel costs has placed an unsustainable burden on transport operators, forcing them to review fares in order to remain operational.

“Fuel is the single largest cost component in the transport sector. The recent increment has created immense pressure on operators, and these costs can no longer be absorbed,” Karakacha said.

He noted that the impact of the fuel price hike extends beyond daily operations, warning of a ripple effect on other essential inputs such as spare parts, tyres, and vehicle maintenance. According to the Association, these rising costs are expected to further strain the sector and contribute to the increasing cost of living for Kenyans.

Operators, he said, have been left with no viable alternative but to pass part of the burden onto commuters, a move likely to affect millions who rely on matatus for daily transport.

The Association also expressed concern over the government’s lack of a strategic fuel reserve, arguing that maintaining at least a six-month supply would help cushion the country from abrupt and frequent price fluctuations.

“It is worrying that there is no sufficient reserve to stabilize prices during global shocks. Such a measure would significantly protect both operators and the public,” the statement added.

The Matatu Owners Association has now called on the government to urgently implement policy interventions aimed at stabilizing fuel prices and easing the economic pressure on both transport providers and commuters.

Despite the challenges, the Association reaffirmed its commitment to working with stakeholders to find sustainable solutions that will ensure continued service delivery in the sector.

The fare adjustments are expected to take effect immediately, with commuters advised to prepare for higher transport costs in the coming days.
