Kenyan Diaspora Round-Table in Washington DC Charts Path for Economic Transformation Through Strategic Investment

Kenyan leaders, professionals, and investors gathered in Washington DC for a high-level Diaspora Round-Table Dinner aimed at strengthening Kenya’s economic transformation through structured diaspora engagement and investment.

The forum, held on March 16, 2026, brought together Kenyan stakeholders from diverse sectors including finance, real estate, technology, and agribusiness, underscoring the growing role of the diaspora as a key driver of national development.

Moderated by the Principal Secretary for Diaspora Affairs, Ms. Roseline Kathure Njogu, and graced by the Cabinet Secretary for the National Treasury, Hon. FCPA John Mbadi, the engagement reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to positioning the Kenyan diaspora at the center of the country’s economic agenda.

Speakers emphasized that the diaspora is no longer a peripheral constituency but a strategic national asset capable of driving investment, innovation, and job creation. Discussions highlighted the importance of moving beyond remittances toward structured wealth creation and long-term investment in Kenya’s productive sectors.

A fireside chat featuring Kenyan professionals who have successfully invested back home provided practical insights into opportunities and challenges in sectors such as real estate, agribusiness, and technology. Participants noted that while opportunities in Kenya remain significant, success depends on strong institutional frameworks, investor confidence, and predictable policy environments.

Key government officials, including the Governor of the Central Bank of Kenya and senior Treasury representatives, outlined ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening macroeconomic stability, improving financial systems, and enhancing the ease of doing business for diaspora investors.

Also in attendance were senior officials from the State Department for Labour and Skills Development, the National Treasury, and Kenya’s Mission in Washington DC, led by Ambassador David Kerich.

In her remarks, PS Roseline Kathure Njogu reaffirmed the government’s commitment to deepening diaspora engagement, stating that Kenya’s global community possesses the capital, networks, and expertise necessary to accelerate national transformation.

“The diaspora is not on the margins of our development story—it is at the very heart of it,” she noted.

The round-table concluded with a collective call for increased diaspora participation in structured investment opportunities, with leaders urging Kenyans abroad to take advantage of emerging frameworks designed to channel capital into sustainable national development.

The event marks a continued shift in Kenya’s diaspora policy—from remittance dependence to strategic partnership for economic growth.
