Gichugu Affordable Housing Project Completed Ahead of Handover in Kirinyaga

The Gichugu Affordable Housing Project in Kirinyaga County, launched by President William Samoei Ruto in August 2023, has been completed ahead of its official handover, marking a significant milestone in the government’s housing agenda.

Strategically located within the agriculturally vibrant Gichugu area, the project is expected to ease growing housing demand driven by rural–urban migration and the expansion of agribusiness activities in the region. Local leaders say the development will help accommodate a rising population attracted by economic opportunities in the county.

The housing project consists of five residential blocks with a total of 110 units, offering a mix of bedsitters, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom apartments. The units are supported by key amenities, including a secure gated environment, ample parking space, and a reliable water supply provided by KIRIWASCO.

Officials noted that beyond addressing housing needs, the project represents a broader shift toward tangible development outcomes in a region historically known for its strong political discourse but slower pace of infrastructural growth.

“For a region that has long endured stunted growth despite producing some of the country’s most eloquent and combative political voices, this project signals a shift from rhetoric to results,” an official involved in the project said. “It places service delivery at the centre of leadership.”

The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration has played a key facilitative role in the project’s implementation. The department worked to align local administrative structures, support community sensitisation efforts, and strengthen grassroots governance systems to ensure a smooth transition for incoming residents.

Authorities say these measures are intended to promote orderly settlement and foster a stable, integrated community around the new housing development.

The Gichugu project forms part of the government’s broader affordable housing programme aimed at improving living standards, creating jobs, and stimulating local economies across the country. Leaders expressed optimism that similar developments will continue to transform communities and support sustainable growth in emerging regional hubs.
