Embakasi East MP Babu Owino Unveils Legal Team to Defend Kenyans Against Injustice

Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has announced the formation of a formidable team of lawyers dedicated to defending Kenyans facing injustice, wrongful charges, and systemic oppression.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Owino said the initiative seeks to bridge the gap in access to legal representation, particularly for ordinary citizens who often find themselves entangled in the justice system without adequate support.

“For far too long, many Kenyans have been wrongly charged or unjustly detained for offences they did not commit, simply because they lacked proper legal representation,” he said.

The legislator emphasized that the newly assembled legal team will be accessible and responsive, offering assistance across a broad spectrum of cases. Among those set to benefit are matatu drivers and boda boda operators who frequently face harassment from authorities, as well as students subjected to what he described as unfair suspensions or expulsions.

Owino also highlighted the plight of young people, particularly Gen Z protesters, who have been arrested and charged for participating in demonstrations. He reaffirmed the team’s commitment to defending individuals exercising their constitutional rights.

“Our team will always be within reach, ready to stand with Kenyans and ensure their rights are protected,” he added.

Beyond reactive legal defense, the initiative places strong emphasis on pro bono services for vulnerable and marginalized communities. These include victims of police brutality, survivors of gender-based violence, individuals threatened with unlawful evictions, and families seeking justice for deceased loved ones.

Legal experts involved in the program say the effort could significantly improve access to justice, especially for those unable to afford private legal services.

Owino concluded by reiterating the guiding principle behind the initiative: “Justice should never be a privilege for the few; it is a right for all.”

The announcement has sparked conversation across the country, with many Kenyans expressing hope that the initiative will help restore confidence in the legal system and protect citizens from abuse of power.
