Barnaba Korir Named First African Technical Delegate to Global World Athletics Event
Barnaba Korir has marked a historic milestone for African athletics after being appointed as the first African Technical Delegate to a global event organized by World Athletics.
Korir, a former athlete and current Executive Member as well as Youth Development Director at Athletics Kenya, made the remarks while attending a technical officials’ briefing at UB Stadium ahead of the upcoming World Athletics Relays.
The briefing was also attended by Pierce O’Callaghan, Head of Competition Management at World Athletics, and Senior Competition Manager Luca Verrascina.
Korir expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him, saying the appointment reflects growing confidence in African leadership within the global athletics stage.
“I am grateful for the confidence shown by World Athletics in appointing me as the first African Technical Delegate to a global event. I receive this responsibility with humility, on behalf of Kenya’s athletics family and the wider African community,” he said.
He noted that the milestone is a result of sustained efforts by athletes, officials, and administrators across the continent, adding that it underscores Africa’s increasing role in shaping global athletics governance.
“This milestone reflects the steady progress built through the collective commitment of our athletes, officials and administrators. It signals Africa’s growing contribution to global athletics leadership and governance,” Korir added.
As preparations intensify for the World Athletics Relays, Korir emphasized his commitment to professionalism and collaboration to ensure the success of the event.
“As we approach the World Athletics Relays, my focus remains on service, collaboration and upholding the highest standards for the benefit of our sport,” he said.
His appointment is being viewed as a significant step forward for African representation in international sports leadership, reinforcing Kenya’s continued influence in the world of athletics.
