Woman Representative Seeks Increased Funding to Support Vulnerable Groups

Nyeri Woman Representative Rahab Mukami has called for an increase in funding to the office of the County Woman Representative, citing growing demands from vulnerable members of society who rely on the office for support.

Speaking at her Nyeri office while distributing bursaries and essential items, Mukami said the current allocation under the National Government Affirmative Action Fund is inadequate to meet the needs of disadvantaged groups across the county.

The legislator noted that the responsibilities of Woman Representatives have expanded significantly as many residents turn to their offices for assistance with education, healthcare, and basic household needs.

During the event, Mukami issued bursaries to students and distributed sanitary pads, potato peelers, and water tanks to schools and individuals from different parts of Nyeri County.

She emphasized that vulnerable groups—including persons living with disabilities—require more sustained support, which she believes can only be achieved through increased government funding.

Mukami cited a case in Gakanga involving a family with nine children living with disabilities who currently lack proper shelter and are reportedly sleeping in the open.

The Woman Representative said she intends to build a house for the family and is lobbying for additional resources to address similar cases across the county.

“We are pushing for more funds through the National Government Affirmative Action Fund because the current allocation is not enough to support the most vulnerable in our communities,” she said.

Mukami expressed optimism that the national government will respond positively to the call for increased funding to strengthen programmes aimed at assisting disadvantaged groups.
