The tragic loss of Hon. Johana Ngeno and five other young lives in the recent helicopter crash in Nandi County has left the nation in deep sorrow. As a human rights activist and a son of the Kalenjin community, it is with a heavy heart that I extend my deepest condolences to the family of Hon. Ngeno, a fearless and brilliant leader who dedicated his life to defending the rights of his people and the Constitution of Kenya.
Hon. Ngeno was a leader who understood the deep socio-political complexities of his time. His resolve to bring together the Kipsigis and Maasai communities, ensuring they live in peace and unity, made him a true pioneer. A crusader for land rights, he fought relentlessly for the land rights of both Kalenjin and Maasai communities, advocating for fairness and justice without any form of discrimination. His courage was evident through the numerous sacrifices he made, including multiple arrests and torture at the hands of the authorities. This tireless dedication earned him the love and respect of not just his own people but those who shared in his vision of a peaceful and just society.
The loss of such a brilliant leader, along with the other promising young people who perished in the crash, is a deep wound for the Kalenjin nation. These were individuals who were full of life, brimming with potential and commitment to their communities. Their untimely death is not just a personal loss to their families but to the entire country.
At this difficult time, I urge all of us to come together and offer prayers and support to the families of the victims. Let us avoid speculation and allow the police to conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of this tragic accident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the loved ones of those who perished, and we stand in solidarity with them as they navigate this painful journey of grief.
It is also critical that we address the issues surrounding the Kenyan aviation sector. While we await the findings of the investigation, it has become painfully clear that there are inherent weaknesses in the systems and technologies employed by the Kenyan aviation industry. We must insist on modernizing the technology used in the industry, ensuring that pilots are fully informed and advised on weather conditions and other potential dangers during flights. The aviation authority must take a proactive role in ensuring constant communication with pilots and monitoring aircraft conditions, especially when flying in unpredictable weather.
Across the world, the aviation industry has embraced technologies that allow pilots to make informed decisions about whether to continue flights or to take alternative routes, and in some cases, to make emergency landings. This advisory role by aviation authorities has saved countless lives globally. It is essential that Kenya adopts these standards in order to protect its citizens from such avoidable tragedies.
Had this helicopter accident occurred in another country, it is highly probable that the aircraft would not have been cleared for takeoff given the weather conditions. It is a sobering reminder that Kenya’s aviation industry must learn from such incidents, modernize its technology, and implement stricter regulations to ensure the safety of its citizens. The failure to monitor pilots and the condition of their aircrafts is a matter that requires urgent reform.
Lastly, I wish to caution certain political figures from turning this painful incident into a political battleground. The recent comments by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua are not only reckless but also incredibly irresponsible. At a time when the nation is mourning, such statements only serve to divide us further. Hon. Ngeno was a leader loved by everyone, regardless of political affiliation. Politicians seeking votes should respect the family’s mourning period and allow them the space to grieve in peace.
In conclusion, as we await the outcome of the investigation into this tragic event, let us come together as a nation and work toward a safer and more accountable aviation industry. We must honor the memory of Hon. Ngeno by continuing the fight for justice, unity, and progress for all Kenyans. Let us keep his family in our thoughts and prayers as we navigate this sorrowful time together.
