MCSK CEO Ezekiel Mutua Dismisses Viral Claims About Gospel Icon Mama Mary Atieno

The Chief Executive Officer of the Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK), Ezekiel Mutua, has issued an official statement refuting what he termed as “deliberate misrepresentation” of legendary gospel singer Mama Mary Atieno, famed for her timeless hit “Adamu na Awa.”

In a statement dated March 2, 2026, Mutua clarified that a viral photo circulating on social media does not reflect the singer’s current condition. According to him, the image was taken during a kesha (overnight prayer meeting) at a church and has been shared out of context to portray a misleading narrative about the veteran musician’s wellbeing.

“Attendees at such spiritual gatherings do not typically appear in makeup or formal attire — a crucial context that has been omitted to perpetuate misinformation,” Mutua stated.

The MCSK boss emphasized that Mama Mary remains a respected and inspirational figure in Kenya’s gospel music industry, describing her as a symbol of resilience who demonstrates that “disability is not inability.”

New Home Donated

Mutua further revealed that friends and fans led by young professional Larry Liza recently handed over keys to a new house for the singer in Buruburu. The house was donated through the Larry Liza Foundation, with Liza reportedly securing a bank loan of nearly KSh 10 million to top up contributions from well-wishers.

The keys were presented to Mama Mary on February 7, 2026, during a special event held at PCEA St. Andrews Church in Nairobi.

The ceremony was attended by prominent gospel artists including Dr. Sarah K, Kambua, and Kestin Mbogo. Also present was Joyce Korir, Bomet Nominated Senator, who pledged to mobilize additional government support toward the initiative.

Call for Support

While welcoming the donation of the new home, Mutua noted that the house still requires furniture and other essential amenities to provide Mama Mary with comfort suitable for her disability and advanced age. He appealed to well-wishers, fans, and the government to continue supporting the gospel icon.

“It’s gratifying to see great Kenyans unite to uplift this legend. I am humbled to have been part of these efforts,” Mutua said.

He urged the public to verify information before sharing content online, warning that the viral photo and accompanying claims undermine the singer’s dignity and legacy.

Mutua concluded by calling on Kenyans and supporters worldwide to ensure Mama Mary is well cared for, continues producing music, and mentors upcoming gospel artists.

The statement seeks to quell speculation surrounding the veteran singer and reaffirm her status as one of Kenya’s most cherished gospel musicians.
