Governor Bii Assures Farmers of Adequate Fertilizer Supply as Planting Season Begins
Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii has reaffirmed the county’s position as Kenya’s agricultural breadbasket, highlighting ongoing efforts to support farmers as the long rains season gathers momentum.
Speaking during a visit to the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) depot in Eldoret, Governor Bii said the county is fully prepared for the planting season, with more than 500,000 bags of subsidized fertilizer already distributed across various stores to ensure farmers access the vital input on time.
“Our county is widely recognized as Kenya’s agricultural breadbasket, and I am proud of the significant contributions our farmers make to the nation’s food security and economy,” said Governor Bii. “We have assessed the availability of fertilizer here at the Eldoret depot, and I want to assure our farmers that adequate supplies are in place.”
The governor urged farmers to take advantage of the ongoing rains currently pounding the region and plant their crops without delay. According to the Kenya Meteorological Department, the rains are expected to continue through May, providing ideal conditions for crop growth this season.
Governor Bii emphasized that timely planting, coupled with access to subsidized fertilizer, will help maximize yields and further strengthen the county’s contribution to national food security.
He was accompanied during the inspection tour by Principal Secretary Dr. Paul Rono from the State Department for Agriculture and Principal Secretary for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Eng. Festus Ng’eno. The leaders reiterated the national government’s commitment to supporting farmers through affordable farm inputs and favorable climate policies.
The visit underscores a coordinated effort between the county and national governments to ensure farmers in Uasin Gishu are well-equipped for a productive planting season.
